Plextor 32/8/4 worth it or not?

I am looking to replace my junk CDR/RW and have heard nothing but good things about Plextor. I have found the Plextor 8432TI/SW (32/8/4) for $149 (new) and free shipping. I know the 32/12/10 is a better drive but is it worth the extra money. I don't do much rewriting so I am not too concerned about the 4X. Any input would be great.

Thanks in advance!

No question the 12/10/32 is worth the extra dough. The main difference besides speed is that the 12X has burnproof technology and the 8X does not. You want burnproof technology!

Are the rebates and coupons already figured into the price or is this drive going to end up under $100? The Plextor drive is from the same place. I really don't want to spend much more than $150. Would it be worth the wait until Jan. to see if the 32/12/10 comes down in price since the hardware market is in the dumps?

Possibly... I imagine Plextor is going to be releasing a new CD-R sometime soon as well... Maybe 16X, although I'm hoping for 20-24X :D An email from July 12, 2000:

<< Hello,

Though 16x is most likely the next step up from 12x, we have not yet seen
this done successfully/reliably. If we do come out with a 16x drive, it
won't be until next year.

My how times change ;) I wouldn't be surprised if they release a 16X, although I honestly wouldn't be surprised seeing something a bit faster from them as well. Plextor seems to keep surprising me time and time again :) Cheers!

If you hunt hard enough you can get the TDK/Plextor 12/10/32 for around $180 after rebates and coupons. That is only $30 more.

I would also like to add that the 10X rewrite capabilities of these drives will make you burn more CDRW's. With an 8/4/32 it was easier to just stick with CDR because of the difference in speed, but with 10X CDRW you will find yourself using it more and more. I do. Also, set top DVD players can read CDRW. IMO you would be crazy to settle for less than the TDK/Plextor 12/10/32 drives.

From what I have read I take it TDK and Plextor are one in the same. If so "who made who".....not the song but the manufacturer.;) Does TDK have the same specs and warranty as Plextor? LJ, any idea where to find the TDK for that price?

Thanks
Jake

CDRW media is much more like DVD's than CDR's. So yes, I am confident that 99% of all set top DVD players play CDRW's. I have an Apex and I can play CDRW's which may include svcd's, vcd's, cda, or mp3's. Not all DVD players can play mp3's, but most can read cdrw.

Buy.com $267: - less $30 Coupon, less $50 TDK rebate = $187 and free shipping.

As long as you close the session - DVD players will play CDRW's. In fact, it is more likely a DVD player will reject certain brand CDR's and play any brand CDRW. If you have a set top DVD Player, feel free to burn an audio CD and check it out. This is also where 10X rewrite shines as I can throw an audio cd together in minutes and bring the tunes in the living room. I can then blow it away.
