Plextor 24x, Lite-on 24x, or Lite-on 32x

Is Plextor really any better than Lite-on? I got my dad a lite-on and it works great, but having never had a plextor, I don't know. I was also thinking about ordering the new 32x lite-on, but does it have any different features than the 24x. I don't really need anything faster than 24x for burning, I'm still using a 4x HP. Thanks.

I just went from a 4x, to the 24x liteon and I can say I love the liteon 🙂

If I were you I'd get the 32x one, but get it before newegg goes out of stock!

Stick with the 24x Lite-On. It's a steal.

The 32X doesn't offer a whole lot, and is supposedly a bit pickier with the media. IMHO, it isn't worth an extra $60 to save maybe 30 seconds.

My OEM liteon 24x burner is pickier than the retail version I bought for someone else (used it a little bit 🙂)

It sucks, but oh well. If I ever service their computer, I'll just swap em (they wont know)

I see newegg.com quit selling the retail liteon 24x... that sucks 🙁

I personally think that Plextor is one of the better brands. You cant really go wrong with that company. But you do pay the price for the quality.

I guess u can take your chance with Lite-On. I havent tried that myself - the really low prices makes me question what goes in that drive!

Pabster is dead-on with his assessment. The LiteOn 24 currently has the most bang for the $$. I'd get a retail version since there are complaints about OEMs apparently. Not only is the drive excellent, the Nero Burning Rom software is excellent and you can upgrade it for free at ahead's site.

Check out the drive reviews at Storage Review. These guys know their stuff. Also, you won't have to suffer through all of us saying "my burner rocks." 😀

All drive manufacturers have RMAs on every model sold.... that includes Yammerhammers and Perplextors. 😉

Spoken like a true tech....😎 but ain't it the truth?!?

i still have a 8x Plextor.........sigh

Lite-On has been making drives for well over a decade, they're a name you can trust. I have one of their 24X drives in my rig, and it's simply the fastest (and most affordable) CDRW I've ever owned. 😀

I've always been a fan of Plextor.. I've owned a Yamaha and wouldn't touch them again.. I now have a LiteOn 24x and couldn't be happy'er -- it was 1/2 the price of the Plextor so I had to give it a whirl.. 🙂

If you get a good one. A lot of people are having similar problems with these drives and having to RMA until they get a good one. If you get one that works they're great. Can't go wrong with Plextor either.

The Liteon is alright, I just bought one, but not even in the same class as my Old TDK 12x
It made me a few coasters, but seems to be working now. I bought the retail 24x
Their quality is slipping. rushing them out to meet demand.

Of course I'd swap their drive. It's the same exact drive, 24x10x40, it's just the OEM is more picky. Also, the customer's computer is an AMD 166, 2gig hard drive, and to top it off, an acer.

So, would it really matter?

nah...

I've been temped to do stuff like that, but my conscience got the better of me.

Why are the 32x drives only a few seconds faster then the 24x drives... it would seem as they should have a 50% increase....I need to get another CDRW and I am wondering if I should spend the money for a 32x...

I havn't owned a Plextor CDRW yet, but I have a LiteOn 24x. I LiteOn works very well, even with a buffer size of 0 it did not make a coaster. Smart-Burn ROCKS!

The only problem I ran into with the LiteOn CDRW is that in one of my systems the tray would open and close upon the drive being detected in the bios...it is fine in my other system though...

Anyone know about the rumor concerning the Plextor and a new firmware which is going to limit the drives burining capabilities??

TIA

Look at the reviews, they do not come out of the gate burning at 32X, but rather ramp up at different levels for a while before hitting the max burn speed...

So a 80 min or 99min cd will have a 30 second difference ? Does the Plextor 24x support 99 mins cds?

TIA

99min cdrs? where do you get such things? i have 24x plextor and love it. if you tell me where to get these 99min cdrs i will tell you if they work on the plextor. Plextor is awesome. never had a problem. liteon is not a company i personally trust.

Because of Zone-CLV. For example, the Lite-On 32/12/40 doesn't begin writing at 32x until the 41:00 marker. That's why it is only about 30-40 seconds faster.

Personally, I'd stick with the 24X Lite-On. Not worth the extra $60 for 30 seconds. But it's your money 😀

I sold my old 8x CDRW. The liteon was moved to another system. (Damn tray would open/close when being detected by the bios) It works fine in the other system...So I need another CDRW now.

Ordered a Plextor 24x from Newegg (these guys should give Anandtech users 10% off for all the business...🙂

I am curious if the PoweRec II feature will make a difference??
