Plextor 16x Only PIO Mode 4?

I have a Plextor 16X and it's running at PIO Mode 4.

My motherboard has the 440BX chipset and it supports DMA33.

All my other devices are running at DMA33 (DVD and hardrives).

Shouldn't the plextor be running at DMA33?

How can I get the BIOS to recognize the plextor as DMA33 compat...

I found some free CD benchmarking software from ahead (ie nero).

The drive appears to running DMA33 since it's only using 10% processing power when running at 8x.

BIOS still indicates PIO Mode 4.

Your drive is running with DMA but not necessarily UltraDMA33 (where the theoretical max transfer rate is 33MB/sec), but most likely your drive is running using Multi-WordDMA2 which is at a rate of 16.6MB/sec, which is equivalent to the maximum transfer rate of PIO Mode4. My Lite-On 16x10x40 runs at that spec. If you are running WindowsXP it will tell you what transfer mode and rate you are running at.

UDMA33 isn't officially supported on the Plextor 161040A, but to enable it, you just set the jumper on the back left hand side of the drive (opposite of the power connector) and the drive will run UDMA33.

Wow. That is great information. I set the jumper, and the BIOS saw it as DMA33.

I only hope this doesn't cause instability in my system. Why isn't this the factory default setting?

I had trouble running my Plextor 12/10/32 with DMA mode under Windows XP - it would start to write a CDR, but would totally lock up the computer part way through the write cycle. I had to remove the DMA jumper from the drive and manually set the transfer method on the controller to PIO Mode 4 to write CDRs without lockups. Others have experienced this problem as well with some Plextor drives as evidenced by the problems seen on this and other forums.

I had some similar issues with my Plextor 161040A just recently in XP, now i can only burn at 12x. i think it has to do with the VIA 4in1's i just installed.
