Plextor 16/10/40A or Teac 516EB?

These two look to be pretty close in features, only the Plextor is about $50-75 (Cdn) more.

Any thoughts on which to buy? Or any other drives to consider? For those saying to go with Plextor, what makes it worth the extra $?

I'm looking for Min 16x CLV, 10x CLV RW.

Larger the buffer the better as I don't like the idea of using Burnproof techniques because of the gaps and possible effect on reader compatibility. Not interested in drives using Z-CLV since it uses the same "linking" technique from what I understand.

I am actually really interested in the Yamaha CRW2200E 20x, since P-CAV doesn't use linking, plus it has an 8mb(!) buffer, but the price is $340 cdn ($90 more than the Plex 16x). Maybe worth waiting for that one to come down a bit.

I would go for the Teac 516EB since its cheaper. I actually have both drives, and I prefer the Plextor, but they're both pretty close.

Beware of a drive that has a high write and large buffer but no "burnproof" like feature..as you run the risk of a bufferunderrun and a coaster...

Plextor make excellent drives....Teac are high quality as well..really depends on what you want to do with the drive..Plex has very good support and frequently update firmware to solve problems.. I can not speak about Teac as I do not have one..if price is an issue look into Acer and Liteon cdrw

LiteOn doesn't seem to be readily available around here (heard good things about it though)

Acer/Aopen don't seem very attractive because the 16x drives are using Z-CLV technique.

For the last year I have had a 8x Yamaha with no Burn Proof and rarely get an underrun unless I try to do something crazy.

Burnproof is nice and all, but I'd rather have the large buffer so that burnproof-ing is a Last Resort (less linking going on the better) Yamaha 2200E has both (Burnproof and 8mb buffer)

Storage Review and CDR Labs have reviewed both drives, and really the choice as to which to get is more just which is cheaper and do you want the bigger name? 🙂 The Teac seems to have faster access times, but the Plextor has a higher DAE speed than the Teac...thats about all I remember off hand.

OK one thing to note you can make backups of some software that is copy protected(safedisc2) with the Plex161040 that Teac will not do..granted it will only play in the cdrw and patches are being made to prevent this..but...

I don't think that feature alone makes the Plextor worth an extra $75-100 (cdn) over the Teac....

I actually found some better pricing on the Yamaha CRW2200E ($270 cdn) so I'm strongly considering getting one of those. (Gotta see if Yamaha has a newer firmware that fixes any of the issues that cdrinfo.com brought up in their review)

CDR Labs also reviewed the Lg 16x10x40. It is also a very good drive. And only second to the Plextor but way cheaper and just as fast. I am still using my 8x burner from LG which has performed perfect. Give that drive a look as well. Here's the review of the LG 16x10x40.

Plextor currently has a $20 rebate in effect also....

You can get good deals in the FS/FT forum also if you want a plex but not the high price of new
