What do you mean by plextor mechanism? You mean the BURN proof? No thanks, I'd prefer the real thing over generic anyday, cuz my 12/10/32 kicks serious arse.

FireCrotchBurns,

I think what Underclocked is saying is that QPS is an OEM which uses Plextor internals for their drives...so as far as quality goes, I think the QPS drives are very well built. As for the Burn-Proof...I believe Burn-Proof is Burn-Proof...it's a licensed technology from Sanyo. You will find other drive companies which have licensed "Burn-Proof" from Sanyo. Basically if a company is going to advertise their drives as having "Burn-Proof" they will conform to Sanyo's specifications...otherwise they couldn't call it "Burn-Proof". There are other technologies out there that are similar also like Ricoh's "Just Link" which is supposedly going to be superior when 24X or faster CDRW drives become available...

Nonetheless, I agree with you that the Plextor Burn-Proof drives rock but there are other drives that have Burn-Proof that rock too like the ones from TDK, Iomega, etc.

I think Gateway has it for $255 - $30 coupon, with free UPS Ground shipping, plus tax if applicable. About the same price. I'm just more comfortable with Gateway's NECX Direct, having dealt with them before.

GetSumOintment,
I'm saying it IS a Plextor without the name on the drawer.

Dear Customer. We apologize for the inconvenience. The mechanism used in this drive is a Plextor.

Subject: new 16/10/40

Max,
I've tried contacting everyone else that I could at QPS with no response.

I would simply like to know if the new IDE 16/10/40 cdrw drive is made using a Plextor mechanism.
Thanks,
Rich <----- me, underclocked

After receiving the above email and after ordering one of the qps drives from Egghead, I get this:

We are currently using a Yamaha engine for our 16x10x40 IDE drives.
The only 16x10x40 drive where we are currently using a Plextor engine is our Firewire model.

Does that suck or what?

And now this:

I am sorry if you received wrong information, I will check with the tech support dept to make sure they are aware this is not the case.
It is easy to see where the mistake was made.
We normally use Plextor for our IDE drives until they can't keep up with our needs and then we switch to another vendor.
Plextor was too slow in developing their 16x and could not get large enough quantities to us in time for us to meet our commitments. So we went with Yamaha.
