Just sold my reliable TEAC 55s SCSI CD-r and I'm looking for a new replacement. The contestants so far are the Plextor 32X/12X/10X and HP93001 both of which run on the IDE bus.

What I'd like to know is which burner do you think is better and why, i.e., what do you like about it.

Plextor. Is there even a question? Plextor is the name in burners for top of the line and ultra reliable. Nothing compares to a Plextor. Wait, haven't I heard that somewhere before?

I've owned both the hp 9100 and the plextor 8432. I currently have the plextor, but both are good burners. Didn't make a coaster with either one. The only thing is the hp is really slow at reading cds. Only thing i don't like bout the plextor is it looks ugly. Aren't hps made by sony?

Thanks for your unbiased opinion fireboy....but why? Some HP/Sony models are often cheaper and have similar features (e.g., sub-channel read/write). Does the Plextor burn faster? Do half dressed fecund nubiles come in the package? Why-o-why is it better?

Not trying to dis Plextor mind you, I'll most likely end up buying one :p I just want to hear explicit reasons in favor of it not just the 'cause I said so' variety.

Thanks!!!

Yeha doodoo I've heard that Sony licences to HP. What do you think caused the slow read?

Hey kind-of-blue,

I just bought a Plextor 12/10/32, there should be no question in your mind get this drive. I have been testing the burn proof technology all afternoon, while mind you I have no intentions of going gonzo and trying to play quake or any game like that, I have used it while doing net surfing, instant messaging, playing mp3's, rc5 is running right now as well. Not to mention I'm posting right now while I burn some CD's. I personally feel that the extra money spent on this drive is money well spent. Also to be able to burn a FULL 650 MB CD in 6 minutes is great. I'm coming from a Ricoh 6200A that has done everything I asked of it till it died last week.

If you need any more reasons just say so, I'm sure I can come up with a few more. lol ;)

Personally i think you should have kept the 55s. They are awesome. They can usually copy right over the top of safedisc proctection, which many dives will not.

I would recommend against an IDE CDR, especially if you like to browse etc while burning. Although IDE CDR's are a lot better than they were.

Regarding HP vs Plextor ( and some others) check out

Well Damolcles, the 55s went to my old man so I can always take the family invitation for dinner to go experiment. As for the SCSI vs IDE debate, I had on old legacy 50pin centronix scsi adapter that slowed down my system considerably. I chose to jettison scsi for the new burner, because 1) I couldn't justify the added cost of the burner + adapter and 2)The newest Plextor 12x-10x-32x can burn a cd-r in 6min at 12x, which is 10min faster than the 55s at 4x.

More importantly, the 55s can't support sub-channel read/write so therefore no ability to backup Diablo 2 ;)
