Hi all, I have a Plexotr 712s DVD Burner and its not working. The window recognize it as a DVD/CD +- rw Drive in "My Computer" but I can't get it to burn. It burnt to 4% and freeze. This is a weird encounter that I haven't face with.... anybody know a cure for this?

I try to put a data disc in there and it won't recognize it. if I try to open it in "my computer" it will freeze. Is this a Hardware issue or a windows issue? I've been trying to figure this out in the past 2 hours. Very frustrated.

Now on the other hand, my Lite-On DVD-Rom can read any disc that I throw at it. So I'm thinking this toward an Hardware issue, but I could be wrong. Please advice.

Thank you.

This is the setup.

IDE1: Master => Maxtor 300Gig
Slave => Seagate 120Gig

IDE2: Master => Plextor 712s
Slave => Lite-On DVD-Rom

What happens when you put a DVD video disk in? Can it play? If it does play, then I would suggest you try to rip it, and see how the performance of the drive is. If it does read it, but terribly slow, then there's probably some kind of hardware issue.

Have you tried burning with another type of disk? It is always recommended to use disks that are approved by the drive manufacturer. Some disks are just crap.

So, try different disks, and try to rip a DVD and see what kind of performance you get.

hi voodoo, the problem is... it can't read any disc that I've put in. I use Fujifilm DVD +R to burn stuff. I've use it thousands of time in other system with the same drive and no problem. Problem is when I swap this drive into my new system.. that's when it start.

So if you put it in the old system, does it work? If it does, then it's a dead giveaway that there's something about your new configuration that is haywire.

How old is the drive? Sometimes they just die... maybe that's the case here.

It could be the cable, might want to try a different cable. Or perhaps different IDE channel on the motherboard.

hi,
this is the sata drive i believe.
if i recall correctly, you need to use one of the built in to the chipset sata ports, i think that most all of the the external chip sata ports have problems with optical drives.
also, be sure to update the bios to the latest version.
good luck.

. The Plextor 712S is a SATA drive, no way can it be used as master or slave. The 712A is the IDE version (my 712A works great!). Make sure you are using the latest firmware for your 712. For best performance, I recommend putting each IDE drive on its own channel - this would require an add-on PCI controller card and cables can be messy. The Silicon Image based Syba for around $20. shipped is one of the better ones.
. If that won't work for you, I would arrange drives thus: Primary IDE channel: HD1 as master, DVD-ROM as slave. Secondary IDE channel: HD2 as master, Plextor 712A as slave (actually connect 712 on the opposite channel from the drive(s) that will most often provide source data). Jumper ALL drives to Cable Select, USE ONLY 80-wire Cables, Remember, blue ends of 80-wire cables go to mobo - drives to be slave connect to the middle connector, drives to be master are connected at the ends of the cables. Make sure all drives are working at DMA speeds (66MB/sec up).
. For nForce based mobos, use the standard M$ IDE driver - uninstall the nVidia IDE driver if you have installed it.
. The Plextor forum at http://www.cdfreaks.com is another good source of support and info.
