As great as plex has been, it lacked a really good remote program for iOS. There were some third party scripts and patches which would make it work well, but now a plex app for iOS has come out from the plex guys themselves. Along with a new version of plex, this really is a huge jump in functionality and polish.

The app's $4.99 and well worth it. I bought it earlier today and man is it sweet. Not only does it have a native remote, it also does streaming. Yep, you can watch anything from your plex library transcoded and streamed to your iPhone/iPod touch. I tried it over wifi with my 1st gen touch and it works flawlessly. I haven't tested the port forwarding etc required to get it working beyond the LAN, but apparently it works too. I don't know how reliable streaming over 3G would be, but if you can watch youtube and you have a decent upload on your home connection, I expect it'd be fine.

Setting up your library and media is a lot easier with the new version of plex too.

:thumbsup; to awesomeness

Does it transcode/stream content that Plex itself streams in? Things like Hulu, etc? Or just unprotected content from your local library?

I'm guessing the latter, but still very nice. I've been using Rowmote to control Plex, and that's been good, but for $5 I'll give this a shot.

It does indeed!

I can't speak for hulu because I'm in Canada, but I'm watching a TED talk right now on my ipod through my main computer.

There's a plugin you get to install optionally when setting plex up called soundflower and it specifically says it is designed to grab the audio from flash streams for the purposes of transcoding to your ipod in real time.

I previously explored Plex and loved it aside from the inability to play Blu-Ray.

If I am able to visually brows my media on a iPad and then have it play on my HTPC this might make me reconsider.

You can do that for sure, and you can even play it on an iPad.

That plus HDHomeRun support makes it an instant contender.
Apple should really model FrontRow off of Plex or XBMC. I guess we will find out today if they actually made FrontRow a contender.

If it only had Blu-Ray............

Too bad the iPhone can't view .VOB files. My server isn't powerful enough to do on-the-fly transcoding.

Plex. Now in TV form:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/03/plex-announces-paternship-with-lg-pledges-to-beat-boxee-box-and/

So pretty soon you'll be able to buy an LG HDTV with Plex built-in. They also announced a Windows version of Plex is going into development. If they can do a Plex TV with Skype, I'm upgrading my entire family :D

Yeah I saw that too. Fantastic news.

If plex is actually built into the tv, then it should just be a matter of pointing it to a network share of shows/movies and it'll do the rest.

Ah, that is what that is for. Thank you very much for that tidbit of information
