I have the same problem, I have come to find out that the plextor is not Ultra DMA, ATA33, but just ATA, i'm guessing here.but i think its 16mb/s.

so what :D does your burned need more than 16Mb/s, do you know that would be a 106X burner to NEED more than 16Mb/s

punkkloser - Read your manual, page 1...I've replied a number of times bout this. My Plex 8432 is *PIO4*, not UDMA33. Can you read???

My only problem with it is that i have read that a ide ribbon is only as fast as the slowest device connected, since i have my 50x cdrom, which is udma, connected with my ata plextor, is my cd rom utilizing the UDMA, which thus lowers CPU usage?

Snoop - I've heard yes & no bout this...Plextor Support sez to put DVD/CDroms
that are UDMA33 as slave on primary IDE, I'm assuming your HDD is UDMA also.

If ya have a 2nd HDD, put as master on secondary IDE, then Plex 8432 as slave. This should give best results. :D

If you want to get your drive to DMA mode 2, read on

In the back of your drive you'll notice 2 pins off to the left of the cd audio connector. In the manual it will tell you these pins are unused. This is not the case. Put a jumper connector over the 2 and voila, DMA mode 2. Make sure your bios is set to auto, it will detect PIO Mode 4 and DMA mode 2 now. Enjoy.
