About to order today from NewEgg. $17 difference between OEM and Retail. Looks like both include Roxio software. Any reason to go retail?

Thanks!

retail usually = larger warranty, and also includes some media.

for $17 USD i'd almost be tempted to get the retail version.

I think the retail also has a Media disc, Cable, and screws. Plus if you buy the Retail and the ConvertX, there's a $50 rebate so you'd need the UPC's ;)

Retail it is. Now, last question, what media should I go for? I guess this drive will burn 4x -R media at 8x. I assume I want a 50 spindle of -R 4x?

Also - I want it to play in my set top DVD player.

Thanks!

LarryJoe, I highly recommend buying a small quantity of media before you go ahead and buy a spindle.

not all DVD"s are guaranteed to first burn, let alone play in what you want them to play in.

so buy 5 at the most, to make sure they both burn AND play correctly.
then buy a larger amount.

I recommend:

Optodisc
Ritek
Princo

haven't used anything other than Optodisc just yet, but I have Fotis on order, and some Princo coming in today. will post results if you want :D
I have an LG GSA-4040B.

cheers :D

Check that - I think I need 4X +R format, to get the unit to burn at 8X. Can someone please confirm? I want 8X burn speed capability and the best format to be recognized by my set top player.

Thanks all, been out of it for a while and want to get this ordered. I got a digital video camera this weekend and realized that burning conventional vcd's just ain't gonna cut it anymore.

Good points Craig. Thinking like CDR's I guess, makes sense. Now + format I guess should do the trick?

LarryJoe yes the 8X is for DVD+R. Check Google as there are reviews on the Drives performance with different Media as well.

I have been using 4x Ritek DVD+R media and it burns just fine at 8x, not a problem at all, and I've probably burned 60 discs or so! This is an awesome burner, I love mine, enjoy!

I thought the XBox reads DVD+R but has problems reading DVD-R.

Excellent, glad I made the right choice. As for set top DVD players in my house, I have a Bose 3-2-1 system that plays mp3's on CRR's, so I gotta think it has advanced reading capabilities. The other is a PlayStation 2. I also have my trusty Apex in the attic.

Gonna get me some Ritek's.
