Order it with as little RAM as you possibly can and add a 2GB kit on your own, it will be cheaper than ordering 2GB through Dell. What kind of graphics card does it have? Are you sticking with the integrated or are you ordering it with the MR X1400 or the Nvidia 7900GS? What do you plan on doing with this laptop? The Inspirons are fine for the price. Somewhat cheap chassis construction, but a great value overall.

Oh. I see. All that for 950USD is a really sweet deal. Inspirons are a great value for the power that you get. A little cheap on the construction side, but the price you pay almost always offsets that negative. The SB upgrade is kind of a waste though; it is just software emulation and from what I've read, it is nothing special.

As for everything else, it looks great. Just upgrade the RAM to 2GB after you get it to help games and Vista run smoother.

For the record: you didn't list that you were getting the 7900GS with it in your original post

You don't have to buy a laptop cooler. They usually don't make too much of a difference. I'd only get one if you find the notebook is running hot while plugged in at a desk.

The only thing that you should upgrade right away is the RAM (bump it to 2GB), whether you do this after buying it (cheaper to upgrade yourself) or through Dell (more expensive), you'll see much better performance with games and Windows Vista.

As for keeping the notebook running in good order - make sure you run a good antivirus and firewall. There is Avira's AntiVir or AOL's version of Kaspersky for good, free A/V software and I hear the Vista firewall is much better than XP's, so you could probably stick with that or you can download Comodo, which is the top rated firewall and it's free.

Physically keeping the notebook running - make sure you use compressed air every now and again to clear the fans and vents on the notebook.

Okay. My advice in the previous post still holds.
