I also don't believe in people under about 6-9th grade saying it because they're 'generally' incapable of comprehending it's deeper meanings and impacts.

I feel the same about teaching religion. Funny how 99% of kids practice their parents' religion and consider it the "right" one. Guess they were just born lucky!

I always participate in both. If that makes me a "sheep" in the eyes of some people, then so be it.

Sheep are sheep because they don't understand they're walking to the slaughterhouse.

If you understand the words of the pledge, make a conscious decision that they represent your thoughts and beliefs, and you then decide to intone them, then you are not a sheep.

Do you have a reason? Personally I find the our current National anthem which is an ode to the American spirit of fighting on and facing adversity with faith that freedom would endure much more inspiring than that lame ass god made a pretty country song.

Thank you for visiting the Ray Charles link. I guess you missed the 7 or 8 other verses in the song . . .

Ray Charles first verse:

Oh beautiful, for heroes proved,
In liberating strife.

Who more than self, our country loved,
And mercy more than life.

Sorry if that does not capture the proper spirit for you . . . .

If that pledge meant anything, there would have been an armed march of millions on Washington DC in 2000.

No thanks, bunch of religious claptrap. Sure there's a single mention of god in the current anthem, but only in the last stanza which is never sung to. Also the current anthem is about forging America against opposition, which is fitting.

I think pledges are stupid. So are anthems.
How about pledging your allegiance to the Skull & Bones Society?

Like our current president? ;)

George W. Bush swore to uphold the Constitution and didn't .

See above. He has an allegiance (a previous oath) that trumps any other oath after the fact. That's what happens when you have people in government with secret agendas and oaths that the public is unaware of.. "it's so secret we can't talk about it"

So, when do get the opportunity to say the pledge outside of 1980s-era (and previous) grade school? I don't think I've said it once since the 2nd grade, and I sure haven't witnessed it being spoken anywhere else.

I was reciting it damn near every day until the end of high school. I graduated from high school in '03. I haven't said the 'under god' since 7th or 8th grade though.

I don't think it makes you a sheep as long as you don't expect others to do the same.

The way I look at it is if you said it just once that's enough. You made a pledge and unless you renounce it there's no need to keep repeating it. I can also understand why a person might not want to say it as it has a reference to a diety they may not believe in.

In the UK we believe in our country without a pledge of allegiance.

It seems only Americans have to stand up and prove how patriotic they are once a day while the rest of the world does not.

Our anthem trumps yours by about a million times too.

Does this include the large numbers of militant muslims, do they believe in the UK?

I'm sure you know more about this since you Americans are all knowing but we do not have a large number of militant Muslims.

Hate to break it to ya but your boogyman is your own, not ours.

Nice thread crapping though. *applauds the monkey doing what monkeys do*

Well, being an Englishman (i'd prefer it if you call me that and not a Brit) and growing up on the countryside with a lot of beautiful women....

Our biggest mistake was electing a man who jumped when GW told him to jump, that has been corrected since then, our biggest gift to mankind is our women, and yeah, most of them are quite lovely.

However, i find myself flirting with women in the US so maybe we're equal on that.

So you have beautiful women too, (you already know this, of course, you married one of the most beautiful) but we still have a better prime minister than you have president.

So we win. :D
