Plebotomy Class

So I got into a phlebotomy class at school so I could pay my way through college. (Pay is $18-24/hr with full benefits, add 40% if you work graveyard.) EDIT: after you graduate and get a job.

When I walked by the class last semester I saw the dummy arm and thought that they had come a long way, not having to poke (hold the jokes) your lab partner. However, much to my dismay we are going to practice on each other.

Now, I have already been through paramedic school years ago, and we all looked like junkies after it was over. Over the years as a medic I have literally thousands of IV starts, so at least my partner should come out OK. Me, time to look like a junkie for the next six weeks again.

Fook.

P.S. Wow, after finishing nine classes related to CS last semester (aside from Art) I found where they hide the women, they are all over in the nursing building. Even my instructor said "sorry if I have a hard time with the girls names, the men will be so much easier because there are only a few of them."

On a side-note, sucks because I can't find my immunization records so I'm in the middle of getting them for a third time, lol. Except my hep immunization, I only had a blood draw to see if I need a booster. MMR, Td (Diptheria Tetanus), Hep B immunization, chicken pox (antibodies that show I had it), and two sets of TB tests. (T2 they call it.)

Had first Td Tuesday along with a tetanus injection, blood drawn yesterday. (Oh, and we need a physical by next week, omgwtfbbq)

Cliffs: Going to look like a junkie to put myself through college without loans.

Trust me when I say that while there were definitely hot chicks in my nursing program, once I graduated, they all disappeared. :(

And phlebotomy isn't so bad. But at least the pay is decent for you.

No, I am going to end up spending around a grand taking the class. (class, supplies, physical, shots/tests, and the state test fee.)

LOL, DeathBUA, true. As a medic I only ran into a few hot nurses because they were all in their forties and most looked like they survived on food from the candy machine. But these are all freshman (or close to it), and it makes me feel my age for sure. (42)

Phlebotomists here make less than $7/hr

Once I get my certificate and pass the state test I get paid. Yes, they make a LOT here in CA.

Ah I see.

So you are taking a class so you can be certified. Then you'll do phlebotomy work to pay for college.

Gotcha, sounds good :)

I did it all through college. I did not make that much money, but I graduated in 93. I worked at a plasmapheresis center on campus, then at the University Hospital...severed all areas. Hardest was premies. uggh. I was the best during my tenure though. Actually had people write letters, cards and request me only...weird. I miss working at the hospital. Now I am a digital plumber...snore.

I used to draw my own blood as well. Piece of cake. It was great to have friends in the chem dept. I worked at the Coag Lab and Blood Bank.

As a post-crash-test dummy, so to speak.

OP is up to his elbows in participation -- and glad to lend a hand +++ , one might say.;)

Fun class today, a couple hotties want to have a study group with me because of my medical background. Next week we start sticking each other, really dreading that. (I have thousands, and I'm not ashamed to say I'm pretty darn good at IV's, but leaving the needle in while you take samples is foreign to me. I would much rather start a 20g with a catheter, remove the needle, and attach the tube receiver in the hub eliminating the needle right away. I REALLY don't like that we remove it underneath a finger holding gauze over the site, that scares the shit out of me.

At least the instructors know about me (the asked us all what our background was) so it shouldn't be too bad, unless they expect more out of me because that would suck.

Chunkee, blood banks do pay less, but if you can work for a hospital the pay is excellent.

P.S. Problem is my externship rolls over into fall semester, there is a week after this class and then fall semester. :)

Just learn to do it right the first time will ya?

Not much pisses me off more than having a phlebotomist stick me 3 or 4 times trying to draw blood. I've taken the works away from them a couple of times and done it myself...
