I wouldn't feel safe in any RAID array, but then again, I'm a little anal about things so don't go by me.

There is none. So you think that the RAID setup is a good idea, then? Or not?

Not particularly no. However, I think this 'poll' is ludicrous and obviously set up only to validate your own opinion. I also think flash is not as unreliable as you seem to believe, in fact I have never had an issue with it, and presenting your arguments in such a hostile manner will not convince me otherwise.

I'm not trying to convince you, just running a poll to get other people's opinions. How is it ludicrous? It can only validate my opinion if my opinion is shared by a significant number of other people.

See, that's how polls work. There's no way to railroad anyone with an honest poll, and this one is simple and honest. Yes or no? Good or bad? You can use slurs all you want, but don't attack polling as a means of gathering information-- that's stupid as hell.

I never stated how unreliable flash is-- just that it is less reliable than magnetic disks. Unless you are saying that flash is at least as reliable as magnetic disks, you have no basis for saying "flash is not as unreliable as you seem to believe".

it's got to be more unreliable than a hard drive based array.

Any time you have 8 individual devices that all must work perfectly, there's a significant chance that it will fail at some point.

So far from the truth. Change the thread title to something less inflammatory and change the 'yes' option to simply yes, then you have a proper poll. Yours is obviously set up to dissuade people from voting yes.

It is not my intention to attack you at all, just your thread/poll.

No, obviously that can't be true. There's no way to prevent someone from clicking "yes", and nobody would be inclined to vote opposite their actual opinion on an anonymous website just because of a title. You are supposing some sort of convincing (hypnotic?) effect of my words. It's a ridiculous thing to say.

In reality, of course, you just don't like my tone. I changed the title just to make you happy.

Well I do not think that is true, not everyone is as strong-willed as you and I. Thank you for changing it, I will now cast my vote ;)

The poll is still misleading, the question was never about security, it was about a use. No one thinks that an iRAM is a secure storage medium, but it gets used. All it takes for the idea to be viable is some votes for using one.

You're still yet to prove that flash memory is less reliable than hard drives by the way.

And this question is obviously not about security, just because I used the word "secure" in a way equivalent to "safe". It's about data loss.

So you're allowed to use security to describe a stable long term storage medium but i'm not?

This is true, useing opinions of users on Anandtech to support a supposition that flash memory is less reliable then harddrives does not work IMO.

Well it depends on how you qualify "reliable". Hard disk drives have a number of moving parts, bearings that can give out, components that can become miscalibrated, etc. Operating shock isn't as large a threat as it once was, but it's still nontrivial. Nonvolatile flash memory is mainly at risk to physical damage and ESD. AFAIK, commercial nonvolatile flash media are protected quite adequately from ESD, and the plastic casing on Compact Flash is fairly sturdy.

But on average, hard drives have a pretty long lifespan. They can withstand a very large number of rewrites/erases/etc. without much difficulty. Nonvolatile flash dies a little inside with every write operation. Under frequent use, it could give up the ghost quite quickly.

Summary: This is silly.
