As you have probably seen before, I am a Freshman in College now.

Can someone tell me what kind of morons come to a Lecture Class (Physics in this case) and sit there and talk to one another all period. This girl and guy are talking and giggling all class. It is seriously audible to those of us surrounding them, but not enough that the teacher in the front of the lecture hall can hear them.

Is this a Freshman thing? Does people get smarter when they move onto Sophomore year??

When I was young and knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken
Sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice no...

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's
Vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of
Valium and slept
Now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his
Head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really
Wept he says

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

Grow a pair and tell them to shut it. And it does change but not until Jr or Sr level classes.

class size gets smaller as you take 300-400 lvl courses. Thus random chatting is more obivious and occurs less.

Dealing with retards is part of life sir. Now either hone your ability to block out background noise or hone your ability to tell others to shut the fck up.

This still happens in professional environments. People do not suddenly become smarter or more polite by achieving a certain number of credits. They will always be morons.

Funny, same thing happened to me yesterday in Chemistry Lecture... except nearly everyone was chatting with the person next to them. We we're reviewing for a midterm nonetheless :disgust:

Me doing that would cause a larger disturbance. (Though as the class of 200 gets up to leave, I may just, as they walk by, say, "Hey maybe next class you guys might want to shut the hell up")

Now when the teacher talks they get louder so they can hear each other! I mean, is it uncommon for someone to just stand up and say something to the effect of "Are you going to shut the hell up now or what??!"

These are the people who give people the reasons for the stereotype. Not only that, the class isn't graded on attendance. If they want to flirt and do whatever, go do it somewhere else, don't sit 10 ft. away from me (and 2ft. behind some other people) and piss us off by doing it in class.

Like I said guys, me telling them to shut up is going to cause a larger disturbance than us all sitting here dealing with it. Seriously, is the guy this new to talking with girls or something??? I have friends in my class and I don't feel the urge to make them giggle all period or talk to them.

By do people learn, I mean- Do people start caring more about their expensive education so that they might just sit and learn? (ie: Be mature and stop acting like a bunch of little teenagers)

Thats not a bad idea lol. I never really sit in the front, and really don't have a superb reason explaining why. Next lecture it might be a consideration.

If you'd rather be discrete about it, just talk to your professor and he'll probably watch them the next class and if they're being out of line, he may talk to 'em afterward. That way you can still be  and avoid being that guy.

You don't need to yell it. I used to do it in college all the time.. just say it so they can hear it.

I have that inexplicable urge to not piss people off- thats what prevents me from doing it really. Towards the end they quieted down a little bit. In the interest of avoiding trouble I should either:
A. Deal with it
B. Move towards the front of the class

That would be the mature thing to do- not to mention I might get even more out of an already excellent teacher if I were in the front or middle as opposed to the back.

Usually Freshman year is harder to help weed people out, with them talking they only screw themselves since they aren't paying attention.

Stop being a pussy and tell them to shut up or get out. I do it at meetings at work. And to answer your question. No, they DOES not get any better. When they are surrounded by people unwilling to take the initiative to correct them they won't change.

Obviously they are not very close to the professor if he cannot hear them.

Why don't you just go sit close to the professor at the front of the class if you're so damn concerned with what's going on in the lecture?

That was my theory when I asked whether it gets better after Freshman year.

Like I said, I should be the bigger man and not cause a huge problem or spark tension. If I have a problem I should take it up quietly on the side (whether it be with the people in question or the teacher).

Most college students view it as a FREE education, because their parents are paying for it. I know firsthand, because mine did. I never talked in class, though. If I didn't want to be there, I would just leave (or not go).

If your parents aren't paying for college, well, it sucks to be you (but still good for you for realizing the value of education). I hope you're going to a cheap state school, in-state, or you have scholarships/grants. Otherwise, have fun with the student loans until you're 35.
