Ok, i'm going to try to keep this short.

Today i took my tower over to my friends house to hook up to his network because we were going to give each other various files we both wanted/needed. My new 40 gig hard drive came, so we put that in, and we also put in a network card of his. We tried running the other 40 gig maxtor on the raid port, but windows didn't recognize the drive, so we put it on the primary ide cable as the slave to the primary hard drive.

My primary hard drive has 2 OS, win2k pro and XP pro. We booted it up, worked fine, recognized the hard drive and everything, so we set up the network card and made a connection, everything STILL worked fine. We then unhooked everything because he needed the network cable for his computer, and we took my tower downstairs and hooked it up w/out a monitor and booted it up. In theory, it should have worked fine, but the computer restarted itself, and we couldn't get it to boot up, so we took it back upstairs, hooked it up to the monitor again, and it wouldn't get past the XP login screen, it would just restart. We couldn't figure out what was wrong and we were really getting frustrated.

We disconnected the new hard drive, and my video card stopped working, so we put in a different video card, which worked, but the computer still would not get past the login screen. Finally we gave up and i brought my now worthless computer home.

When i got home i took out the new hard drive and put in my PCI video card, then i booted it up, same results. Took out both sticks of ram and tried each on its own, same results. I couldn't get anywhere. I disconnected the cd rom, and burner, tried a different power cable on the hard drive, nothing worked, wouldn't go past login screen. I then got out an old hard drive that had Windows 98 on it. Plugged that in, it booted up, recognized new devices, and then it would freeeze. At this point i gave up, unplugged the tower, and went to work.

I returned home two hours later, plugged in the tower, decided to try booting it up. Whala, goes into XP, works OK. Running one stick of ram, PCI video card, CD Burner, CD Rom, Floppy, and modem. I immediately started backing up files because i'm worried that this wont last long.

What are your opinions on what's wrong with this machine? I can't figure out what it is. No clue. My voltages are:

3.3 V = 3.49 V
5.0 V = 5.10 V
12.0V = 12.66 V

System Specs:
AMD Thunderbird 1 ghz
Iwill Kk266-R
Asus GF2 7100 series 64mb (mx 400)
Maxtor 7200 RMP 40 gig HD
if u need more, it's in my sig

Please tell me what you think is wrong, i need suggestions on what to do.

Do you have WinXP set to auto-retstart on Fail?
Maybe MOBo is not grounded and moving it all over the place didn't help I would re-install EVERYTHING

Could be a ghost, ghoul or gremlin maybe even a critters;)

Good Luck

yeah, it's on auto restart i believe

i swear, i think my computer has a mind of its own. it's been very grumpy lately and we just haven't been getting along. i've been thinking about ending the relationship, but i'm just too attached to her. she's running my life :(

i'm backing up files right now, it seems to be running, my friend also suggested i just take everything out and put it back in.

my friend put everything together for me, what exactly do you mean by the motherboard being grounded? it didn't seem to be too grumpy until i moved it, then all he11 broke loose.

Um, maybe try updating the motherboard BIOS? The 3.3v line is a bit high too, but that shouldn't cause the problem.
It didn't hit anything, or did anything electrical touch the back of it? That's weird that it would stop working just from being moved.

A lot of my posts also get ignored too, so I wind up solving some of them myself...eventually. ;)

Is your heatsink a heavy one? How is the clip on it? Is it tight? If not then your heatsink may have shifted when you carried it and is not making good contact with the core anymore and your having heat related problems.

Go into bios and monitor your temps and see if they tend to be 55C or higher after it sets a few minutes. If thats the case then you may just need to reseat your heatsink.

Another possibility might be loose motherboard and hooking up cables might of shifted it so the head of one of your screws might be shorting out or have even knocked a component off.

Have you completely disassembled and reassembled it yet? I would. It really don't take long and if its not a terminal hardware problem then a complete reassemble is sometimes the trick. It also gives you a chance to find and eliminate user error like too many risers left on the mobo's backplane or memory thats not quite in right.....etc.

Good luck...........:)

The temperatures are fine. Both case fans are disconnected because i unhooked my fan bus because i thought it was possible shorting something out. For some strange reason, the computer works fine now, but all the problems took their toll on the hard drive and i'm going to have to format and redo it. When i boot up it wants to do disk checking and it wont complete disk checking on the D: drive which has Windows XP on it.

The CPU temp reached a high last night of 42 w/ no case fans running and the side of the case off. Generally with the side on and the fans running it's anywhere between 30 and 40 depending on the temp in my room.

The heatsink is on there good, i'm the mobo is fine. I think today after classes i'm just going to take everything off/out and put it all back in. I wish i didn't have to format my HD but it has some issues now, at least i managed to get it to start up and i was able to back up my files :)

What would cause the high voltages? Is there something i can do about that? I'm running a stock power supply that came with my Enlight 7237 case. Should i upgrade? Here's what i'm running off of the power supply:

Acer CD Rom
HP Burner
Floppy
Maxtor 40 gig
2 80mm Panaflo fans (fan bus)
iwill kk266r mobo
Volcano 2 Heatsink Fan
neon light (fan bus)
did have another maxtor in, but took it out.
HD cooler

i believe the power supply is a 300 watt
