DUDE start PLAYING NOW ONLINE! jsut start playing hadn after hand, the basic rules take 10 minutes to memorize, but you need to start playing hands....

Playing play money will do him absolutely no good and will more than likely hurt him.

Rather than losing play money, learn poker by throwing away real money. That sounds like a great idea.

When you start playing professionally then you can give me advice ;) Play money poker bears no resembalence to real money poker and therefore is not a good way to learn. End of story.

Actually, I was not the one giving any advice. You were the one giving bad advice. Poker at the lowest level is still the same game, governed by the same rules and probability. If you can't win huge at play money, then you surely can't win using real money. It's pretty apparent to anyone who plays at least semi-seriously not to mention professionally.

You are the one choosing to perpetuate one of the bigger myths regarding online poker.

The truth lies in the middle. I disagree that nothing can be learned when not playing for real money. You can still learn things like which hands to bet on and which/when to fold. The problem with not playing for real money is people don't bet the same. When there is nothing to lose people are more liberal with betting and bluffing is less effective. Online poker has the additional disadvantage of not being able to see and read your opponent. This may not matter when playing online since everyone has the same disadvantage, but it does matter when playing in person.

In poker you try to win hands.
If you win the hand, then she removes a piece of clothing.
If she wins the hand, then you remove a piece of clothing.

Last one with their clothes on wins!

Actually, I do play professionally. As someone with years and years of poker experience I feel my advice carries slightly more weight than yours. But that's just my opinion. I guess you really know what you're talking about. Carry on. Good luck at those play money tables. I'm sure they'll turn you into a winning player in no time.

Actually, that is sort of the point. Bluffing is an advanced part of poker. You do not need to (nor should you) bluff at play money tables. Just concentrate on playing good hands while taking your position into account and you will win easily. Sure, the variance may be high but you will come out way ahead over the long run. Then you can move to some micro-limit tables and higher as you consistently improve.

Wrong. As soon as both of you have no clothes on, you both win !

I play for real money. I would not consider myself a professional as I have a steady job and do not rely on poker as a significant source of income. Whether you are professional or not does not really matter. There are terrible professional poker players out there.

Regardless, what each of us has in terms of poker experience has little to do with the issue being discussed. The fact is that I can sit down at a play money table and turn 1K play $$ into millions in a short time. The reason for this is that the general skill level is extremely low. Therefore, it is a good place for someone who is learning the game to start. They gain experience and take little risk. Explain why there is nothing to be learned by playing for play money.

Once they deal the card, grab your cards, look left, look right...and yell "Go fish!!!"

I played and lost the $5 in about 45 minutes, then they gave me an additional $2 and I lost that in about 15 minutes (this is nickel and dime stuff here). Oh well, it was fun.

Poker's one of those things that you learn through experience. I read the rules, played a little play money online, played with friends with buyins and I came out thinking yea I learned a lot.

I played like 1000 hands on partypoker and I changed completely.

Played another 1500 hands or so and lost like $400, and I came out learning a lot more.

Finally I played at least 10,000 hands when I switched to Bodog and I made all my losses back and came out positive. You learn SOOOOOooo much by playing.
