Google is your friend. I'm sure there are plenty of sites out there that explain the basics.
I'm still working on a project so just reading a few quick tips in this thread would be nice.
For beginners, playing tight is your best bet, let the hand make itself, don't you try to make it.
Poker hands in order:
Royal Flush
Straight Flush
4 of a Kind
Full House
Flush
Straight
3 of a kind
2 Pair
1 Pair
Ace High
The most important part of the game is playing the right hands from the right position. Position is the single most important part of the game - playing last (dealer) is the best position to play from.
The best starting hand is AA, then KK, then QQ, then JJ .... 22
After pairs the best starting hands are AK, AQ, AJ, .... A2
After aces the next best hand is KQ, KJ, K10, ...... K2
It goes down from there.
Just because 22 is a better starting hand than AK, doesn't mean that you should play it all the time. The chances of losing money on 22 is far better than losing money on AK
Every card that falls in holdem is better than a 2 so it gives everyone a chance to beat you with a crappy hand. It is also very difficult to read if someone hit a pair if they have a bad hand and they aren't betting. In addition with 22, every other pocket pair beats you and your chances of drawing to win are bad since there are only 2 more 2s in the deck.
In general, raise 3-5 times the big blind pre-flop with a good hand. Try not to vary your raise with different quality hands. If you raise 3 times BB with A10, raise 3 times the BB with AA.
The most important thing with poker is to win money not hands. To do this maximize your wins and minimize your losses. Both part are very important.
