Hi all,
Looking at building or buying new system very soon. Weighing pros/cons of custom vs prebuilt, both in price & quality. LOTS of people complain of problems w/ new pre-built PCs. Like to stay < $1000 (~ $750 better). Have a DVD/CD burner, HDD (but PATA), sound card can use till catch good sales.

Please share sage advice on what to stay away from & what TO consider on mobo brands / chipsets, & recommendations for solid, stable, reasonably priced ones? Advice about cheap components to avoid like power supplies, cheap fans in cases, etc? Specific brands / models suggestions would be great! I'm sure I'll be looking at either AMD 64 x2 (AM2) or I- C2D.

I don't need the latest, greatest, fastest high end equip, but generally don't buy junk either. Heard about mobos where it took the mfg a yr to fix the bugs (some never). I'm more interested in stability, durability, support (BIOS updates, etc.) & reasonable expansion than blazing speed or masses of features I won't use.

Couple of people suggested (for ex.) some Asus mobos around $100. Will any mobo in that $ range have "quality" components and not be buying a pile of headaches? Not complaining if $100 mobo is sufficient for a stable, durable system w/ decent expansion - just cautious. What about differences in "solid" capacitor mobos vs others?

Not really a gamer - would like to do light video editing (& not grow old doing it) & LOTS of multi-tasking. Time (meaning slow computing) is money. Want a system that WON'T be obsolete in 3 - 4 yrs.

A custom PC shop where a friend worked yrs ago did NOT like ECS mobos (back then). Sorta get the idea they're still not too great, but Fry's sells them CHEAP as combos.

Thank you for any help, guidance & suggestions.

I don't OC and have no need for high end graphics.

I just put together a system using Biostar TF7025-M2, 2gb Crucial Ballistic ddr2 800, AMD X2 3800 and it runs perfect so far. I do no gaming but use for business apps and web surfing. This is my 2nd biostar, first was m7nmg. They both have onboard video which is fine for my needs, saving lots on not having to buy a video card.

Needing to upgrade my power supply I used a Corsair 550W. total cost $370 with some rebates due.

I highly recommend, but don't know if it will be obsolete or not in 3-4 years. For me probably will still be OK unless technology changes drastically.

-Abit IP35-E ($70 AR @ Newegg...all Japanese caps board/great overclocking board/all passive heat sink). You can read more about this board in MB forum
-Antec Earthwatt 380/430/500 PSU. Get the cheapest model that's on sale. Fry's.com had the 500 on sale last month for $30.
-Intel 2140 ($70 @ Fry's BM today), 2160, 4300, 4400, or 4500. $100 would be my upper limit. You should be able to overclock these to at least 2.8GHz.
-HP/Crucial DDR2 667 at Hot Deals forum. $22 AR. Easy 400MHz with 2.0Vdimm and 5-5-5-15-2T timing.

Solid caps = Marketing. All Japanese caps is sufficient. Look for a case with one 120mm rear exhaust fan. I like the antec Solo. It's reasonably priced at $50. Nice quiet case with good air flow.
