Hi guys.

I am just wandering if you guys could throw some suggestions at me. I have 3 PC's and i am setting them up all to do different things. Ill tell you what i require and perhaps some suggestions as the best way to do things could be thrown at me?

Well I have my desktop computer running XP Pro which i basically use for all my personal stuff such as homework and stuff.

In my cupboard, I have 2 PC's which are the same and I havnt put an OS on it yet. I was thinking of making one into a Media Center and perhaps the other into Windows 2008 Server.

Now I often need to access my files when im away from home. Currently, I just RDC to my desktop computer, but that can be slow sometimes. My desktop that i use everything for has all my files, but i want the media center to access these files.

Now whats the best way to do this- for the media center issue, should i just share the folders on my desktop and they access this or will their be a bottleneck because of running through the media center and then to the other computer?

Also... to be able to access my files away from home, should i set up some sort of VPN server through the 2008 server or something liek that?

Any help appreciated thanks

You probably do better with Windows Home Server (WHS).

For few computer there is No real need for a Server Like Windows 2003/2008.

WHS meant to help in storing files, backups, Media, and external connection to and from the Internet.

But i want to install 2008 so that I can teach myeslf it- its not gonna serve as a server, really just so i can practice using the software

Virtualize it.

thanks for that idea... but would much rather have it on a separate pc as i have a spare lying around...

If you're going to buy Server 2008, you might as well take advantage of one of the biggest features included with it... Hyper V.

Thanks for those links, just finished downloading the iso. Im still curious though how i should structure my data- should i have it on the server or can i have it on my desktop computer and setup a vpn through the server so i can access it, and for the media center, just use shares to access the data?

Thanks
