Please suggest a pair of $30-$40 over-the-ear headphones.

I figure I should get some headphones for my dorm room in the fall. I won't be listening to them a ton, so I'm only planning on spending $30-$40. Please suggest some brands and/or models. Thanks!

By over the ear, do you mean the types w/o the headband? Either like the street style Sony's with the neckband, or purely the over-the-ear cups like these, which I've heard are quite good, and suggested from IGN too.

Good luck!

Sorry, forgot to specify. I mean exactly like the pair NuclearFusi0n1 linked. I'll have to check those out..I was planning on heading up to Best Buy over the weekend anyway.

Edit: Though I actually am looking for a pair like you linked to use with my walkman. I'll have to look at those too. 🙂

Koss KSC-50 headphones are great. They are the same type as what EvilYoda linked to. Best ~$30 purchase I've ever made 🙂

The best over-the-ear headphones have to be the Koss ksc-35. They do not look as slick as the ksc-50s, but they've been proven to sound better.

i buy the cheap labtec ones from buy.com, it's like 30% to 50% off retail prices, before shipping. I have the elite 840 which is very comfortable. I have the elite 835 which is less comfortable but offers volume control.

They have some of the better KOSS headphones there too.

I have not looked into any other brands.

I just picked these (Koss KSC-50) up last night at Circuit City and I am amazed by the sound quality. The bass reponse is great. They were $14.99, cheapest I've seen them. I returned the Sony ones like EvilYoda linked to as they were NOT worth the $30.

Also check out the Koss KSC-35 as they get rave reviews. Radioshack sells the exact same headphones under the name Optimus Pro 35.

Koss ksc-50 are arguably the best headphones <30

But why not spend a little more and get the sony mdr-v6 (not v600)

The v6's are highly reccomended on nearly all the audiophile forums

the sony mdr-v6 are a bit pricy though, retail is around 140. I also want to know about headpones for the dorms for under 30

Welcome to 1980!

sony mdr v6 for $56

Perhaps you are looking at the mdr-v7506, which is the exact same hphone as the v6 but with a gold plated miniplug and a $50 price difference

I think I'm going to buy those Aiwa HPX222. I don't particularly like the ear clip thing on the Koss headphones, especially since I wear glasses.

I concur with NuclearFusion. When I saw this thread, I was going to suggest those exact Aiwa's. I bought them and they simply RULE! For $29.99, you can't beat em!

I just ordered a set of AKG K44's ($29.99, here, search for 241030). I was looking for a cheap pair of tracking and occasional mixing headphones. I read some positive reviews on them for this purpose, but I think they would work fine for general listening as well.

Another vote for KSC-35's. They are lighter, more comfortable, and fit better than the KSC-50's but they are harder to find and more expensive. The KSC-50's look better. Both use the same driver so the sound is identical.

closed headphones generally don't sound as good as open headphones.

Open headphones aren't as open as you'd think, i have the sennheiser 580's and you can just barely hear any outside noise when the headphones are off, and when the headphones are on to a moderate degree, you can't hear the phone next to you.

Basically, however, i think the sennheiser 580's and the sennheiser 600's (eBay for approx $120-200, depending on model) are probably the best sounding headphones anybody could ever own.

The Grado SR-60's and SR-80's (and above to the 325's) are very good headphones as well, but i never really caught on to their design much.

If you really care about audio quality and you just really NEED to have a pair of closed headphones, get the Sony MDR-V6's; i think u can look around and find them for under $60 pretty easily.

However, if you think that you MUST get closed headphones because you live in a dorm, forget it. I have a roommate and he can't really hear my Sennheiser's.

Just got the KSC-50s from suggestions here. They're not kidding, these things sound facking awesome. Best $20 I ever spent.

ok for open headphones, besides the grados (because i dont like the way they look very much) which is a good open headphone thats approx 30-50 bucks.
