I did an internship in DC back in the late 90s....there was always some pretty wild life at Sign of the Whale...

I recall seeing some chick blow a dude at the corner of the dance floor at Sign of the Whale back in 2004/2005. I remember thinking the place was rather sleazy before that happened, and the event didn't do much to change that conclusion. Think that was the last time I went there.

Can't think of the name right now, but there is a quiet park somewhere in the Falls Church area that has a quaint stream running along the walking path - we used to take the dog for a nice hike and let her play in the water - maybe 1 - 2 feet deep for a good mile. I want to say it was off Route 50, but I can't think of the name.

Where are you from op? Going to shenandoah and also dc is like taking two different trips, and depending on traffic it could take hours and hours to get from one to the other. Leave dc at 3 or 4? You woukdnt get back to the shenandoah before 7 or 8.

Go eat at the inn at little washington, about 25 minutes from skyline drive on 211. In the middleof nowhere, you wouldnt even know there was a town there, let alone a town with a world class 5 star restaurant. Prepare to spend 3-500 a person.

West Virginia, its right next door :)

West virginias Monongahela National Forest is beautiful. The Spruce Knob area, Seneca rocks national recreation area and and Dolly sods are great places to visit and camp. There are motels in some of the small towns around there and Smoke Hole Caverns is there as well.

Seen bears at Bear rocks in at the edge of Dolly Sods Wilderness.

From New York. Yeah, I'm starting to realize that. I also made the same mistake last year when we went to Maine. I thought I could handle the distance but was wrong. However, since we have to go through Washington either way then why not stop there? I don't think I'll have the energy to but we'll see...

Was this an attempt at being cute?

It's not that long of a drive outside of rush hour about an hour and a half to the northern section Front Royal, rt 55. For the central section of the park route 211 from Air and space 1.5 hours hour from DC. I drive out there for the day a couple times a year to fly my RC slope planes, nice lift from 3K+ foot hills :p

I wanted to update this thread and thank those that gave suggestions and opinions. We had a really nice time. I enjoyed the mountain driving in my truck. Really addictive. Unfortunately, we did not see any wildlife other than ravens (or crows). Hiking was a chore and exhaustive, especially with a 4 year old. We stopped in West Virginia so my wife could get a massage. In Shenandoah there was a Long John Silver. I love that place and am thinking of opening a restaurant in NYC. There was no place to fish and we made the mistake of using only Google Maps to find a river to fish in. There are no fish in the mountains. No big ones, anyway. In D.C. we stopped by the House of Understanding. Went to Baltimore for lunch (and The Wire) and then went home.
