Purpose: to play DVD's, Blue-Rays, display Netflix streaming video, display video files from hard disk.

Last time I built a desktop was at least 3-4 years back and don't know what's up to date. Thanks.

I have one of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856119072) attached to my TV. Does everything you ask (including playing ripped blu-rays) without breaking a sweat. Installed Win7, and XBMC, and am exceptionally happy.

It doesn't have a DVD drive, so if you want to play them you'll either have to rip them, or buy an external drive.

I have a Sony Blu-Ray player, and tried to use it. What a POS! The menuing system for going through the various features was slower than a dog, it didn't work well with any of the DLNA servers I set up; I simply gave up on it.

Are you wanting the new box to have local storage, or just be able to stream over the network from your server (regular desktop computer)?

Typical wireless is not the best for 1080p content...

Maybe a MOD should move this to the HTPC section?
