Hey all,

I have been out of the hardware game for awhile, so don't really keep up. Can you recommend me a HSF for the following parts ?

ASRock Z97 Extreme6 LGA 1150

Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150

2 G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)

Anyways, I ordered all of these for my brother, so they are waiting at his house. I will be swapping all of that into this existing build.

My concern with the HSF and the RAM is getting enough clearance. I have read some reviews on the RAM that it bumps into the HSF. I have also read with some HSF that space is a concern.

I am not looking to watercool or anything, but just get a mild overclock. Can you recommend a HSF where space and clearance is a minimal issue ? I am going to his house to build it, so I won't have access to my usual suite of PC tools.

The 212 EVO is a great price/performance point for a more powerful cooler, stuff like the Noctua NH-D15 is there if you want to go all in on heatpipe cooling for a lot of cooling without much heat. The Noctua stuff also comes with a whole bunch of really nicely put together stuff, and their high end heatsinks have generally good compatibility which is easily checked.

The D15 has his motherboard on the compatible motherboards list, and the ram is on the compatibility list for the D14. Case clearance might be interesting.

What is your budget?

For ~$30-40, I really like the ACFZ i30.
In the $40-50 range, I like the Scythe Mugen 4 (although it is strangely high priced from usual outlets now)
In the $50-60 range, the Phanteks TCP14 is a strong choice.

Above that, you could make an argument for the NH-D15, the Thermalright Silver Arrow, or the NH-U14S, but you're seeing pretty sharply diminishing returns on your dollar as you cross the $60-70 pricepoint.

EVGA ACX -- $52 at the Egg. Outperforms either D14 or D15 -- by itself. smaller -- single heatpipe tower. I don't even like promoting it, because they put a lot of effort into "style" and "bling." Red LED fan. But -- it's better, it's smaller.

Somebody! Somebody please!! Find me a heatpipe cooler that outperforms this EVGA thing! Is there any such thing out there?!

Noctua NH-U14S.

About 6C less efficient than the ACX. Look at some of the current threads, check the review at Hardware Secrets, and look at my results here in those threads.

Next suggestion? Maybe there's something out there we missed for the last couple years.

Maybe someone needs to build something like an H60 with a radiator that's 3" thick.

I run mine with a thermalright silver arrow sb-e. I imagine finding a more potent air cooler would be difficult. The cooler doesn't block my ram slots on an Asus Maximus hero.

That's pretty hard to believe, but if ya say so, I know you have the other.

If you have 171mm clearance in your case for a CPU HSF, the Thermalright True Spirit 140 Power is hands down the best price-performance ratio in the high end air cooling area.

Beware of those ACX reviews, like the Thermaltake Frio, the EVGA cooler only competes with DH 14/15 in cooling performance at the expense of 10db+. The Thermalright TS140P competes in both cooling and noise performance against any dual tower cooler. Now that's quite a feat (albeit it's height which makes it prohitive for most people and their cases).

But it doesn't have a 6yr warranty or come in brown . . . BROWN :awe:

Actually, I like how Noctua fans sound at full RPM (something that raw numbers never show). And on low RPM, they are indeed, very quiet.

Furthermore, they send mounting-kits for free. For example. Needless to say, the whole installation process is very easy. You get what you pay for.

This. I swapped my CM Evo fan with an NF-A15, and it is night and day. It's inaudible at idle, and even under IBT/Linpack/P95 it sounds like a low-whooshing. I can certainly hear it, but it is quite pleasant.
