I just built a new machine for my 17 year old daughter and would like to buy her a new generation game that would utilize/show off the capabilities of her GeForce 2 MX card. I am familiar with Q3A, & UT but was looking for something that was not just a shoot-em-up game.

In the past, she enjoyed playing Myst, Riven and Half Life (yes I know, HL was basically a shooter). I looked at Real Myst, which I don't want, since it is just a 3D redo of the origonal.

A salesperson at the local CompUSA suggested:

Thief 2
Beyond Atlantis
The Crystal Key

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

650 Duron o/c to 700
Microstar K7T Pro
128 meg RAM
30 GB 7200 Maxtor HD
Prophet GeForce 2 MX
19 inch Hitachi 751
DVD drive

I heard the adventure game "The Longest Journey" is excellent.

My wife loved King's Quest "Mask of Eternity"(approx $20) but it only uses glide and Heretic 2(approx $10).

I was thinking about getting RealMyst($10 at Staples this week).

Just a thought.

I'd go with either of these recently-released great games: Alice or Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I've played Alice and it's a great game and looks great too. Haven't played Kabuto yet (it's on the way, though) but the screens look great from what I can tell. You probably can't go wrong either way.

Try the final fantasies (7 and 8). I think 7 was better tho. Not gona strain your system for sure. If you do get these I recomend getting a gamepad to play it on, keyboard just doesnt work.

Thief is a good game but I think a bit too tedious (sit wait watch wait run stop wait watch).

Dethoff, I have a similiar setup,MSI K7T Pro,Geforce2 MX,anyway A MUST BUY,is Baldur`s Gate2, this game is brilliant ,yes it`s a RPG adventure but graphics, playability are excellent, also no problems driver or hardware wise, btw I`m using 6.31 drivers.Whatever you do make sure you buy this game.

🙂

Maybe No One lives forever? I know its a shooter, but it isn't a serious game at all. I really think just about anyone would like it. Maybe download the demo and let her try it out?

some RTS games like Warcraft, Starcraft, Age of Empires might be a good choice. also role playing games like Fallout and Baldur's Gate. don't forget stupid Windows games, like the After Dark pack; my wife loves them...

Thief 2 is good..Also try age of kings..The multiplayer game is very good and you can never get tired of it. Only downside is its only 2 D and nvidia cards don't have very good 2D performance.

The real question is what about the games you listed did she like about them?

-The shooting?
-The thinking?
-The adventure?
-The strategy?

My "guess" would be she likes thinking/strategy games(by the combination you listed)

-Thief and Thief2 are both thinking games(not actually shooting games-on the hardest difficulty setting--> the challenge is you can't kill anyone, and still must complete the mission)

-For adventure and cuteness, "Croc" and "Croc2" they are 3D versions of mario brothers...

Well if she like HLand you dont want a straight shooter like quake3 and UT maybe Deus EX would be a good option. It's a shooter/rpg hybrid and it's pretty damn good.

The wife is pllaying the Sims and loves it... I dont know I have never tried it.....I like to blow things up and kill people...

If she likes Kings Quest style games then check out The Longest Journey. Amazon seams to be one of the few people selling it in the US, they aparently I having trouble getting a publisher here or something. Anyway, the graphics in the game are awsome, the speech acting is perfect (or very near so), but the absolute best aspect of the game is the storeline and character development. I have never played a game where the characters are developed this well, and where the characters (especially April Ryan, the girl you control) evolve as the store progresses. Review sites really like this game also, check out IGN-PC for an example...it made there editors choice list.

Now that I have the full versions, I can fully recommend Giants & Alice. They both are great, both look great, but Giants is the game that will truly show off that card. It's pretty unique in the gameplay department, too. It's a little like MDK2, but it's very much its own game. I'd highly recommend Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
