I ordered the wrong cpu for a dvr build for use with win 7. I get an error message on the desktop saying I can't get any updates. Can you recommend a cpu that will work with win 7? My MB supports LGA 1151. Thanks.

Win7 is OK with a skylake processor I'm pretty sure, as long as your board is OK with that.

I'd be more sure if someone agrees with me :) I think the line was drawn by MS with kaby lake processors and ryzen.

Try this:-

It unblocks precisely the same fake restriction you mention. KabyLake actually works perfectly on W7. Don't let MS or anyone else tell you otherwise.

MS "drew the line" there, but in reality Kaby Lake and Ryzen CPU's (R3 1300X, R5 1500X, R5 1600, etc) both work fine on W7. All chipset, Intel iGPU etc, drivers are available and MS's precious "update block" was unblocked last April with above "zeffy" patch. The two most recent CPU's that are confirmed to not work (ie, the first that are genuinely incompatible for non completely fake 'MS reasons') are:-

- Z370 Coffee Lake CPU's (i3-8100, i5-8400's, etc) - the CPU's themselves will work perfectly on W7 (W10 chipset drivers actually still contain a W7/8 version) but only with a dGPU - it's the first CPU that there's absolutely no iGPU drivers for. Not an issue with a dGPU, but without one the UHD 630 iGPU will be stuck in "VGA Compatible mode" with no video or 3D acceleration.

- Ryzen+ APU's (not CPU's). Ryzen CPU's (1300X, 1500X, etc) also work perfectly on W7 with dGPU's and full W7 driver suite available. But as is being discussed in the "AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled" thread, the most recent 2200G / 2400G APU's are not booting under W7 at all.

@BSim500 - don't get me wrong, I love the idea of working around MS's stupid attempt to drive people to Win10. I'm just surprised that I didn't think of your suggestion (admittedly I didn't know of that software, I would have just found out the update KB number if possible, uninstalled it, then blocked it) myself :) It's a shame about Ryzen-G.
