I want to upgrade a Dell Precision T1700 with an SSD. What SSD would you recommend for this aging system? I would like to be able to boot to it. This is not cost-sensitive. Looking for a 512GB SSD.
OS is Windows 7.

Well, any should work, but, what OS is on that machine?
If you stuck XP on it, then that will limit the kind of a SSD you should use.

Had to look up that system. Assume it came with either Win 7 or Win 8 from the dell spec sheet. So hopefully you got then free win 10 upgrade along the way. I'm personally a big fan of samsung drives. Since your system doesn't have m.2 or NVME you are stuck with SATA. so I'd say 850 Pro if you want the best performance you fan get or the 850 EVO if you want a great value mid range drive.

On the other hand, if you are currently using even the best of disk drives as your system drive, even the cheapest SSD you can buy is going to be a huge upgrade.

Thanks Ratman and Elixer. It has Windows 7 on it.
I don't like Samsung, so any other recommendations? Sandisk? Intel? According to a South Korean friend of mine, Samsung treats their South Korean customers like dirt -- zero manufacturer warranty in South Korea. If it breaks a month after you bought it, tough luck. They treat their employees very poorly too. Samsung has so much political power in South Korea, they can do what they want there.

Crucial or Western Digital/Sandisk would also be good. Adata is also decent recently it seems.

Yeah, Crucial, Sandisk, Toshiba / OCZ, Adata. Basically, any company that has a good warranty program would be good.

I'd also vote for crucial depending on your goals. I've been using them as my second choice after samsung for a long time, going back to the M4. Not top performers but good bang for the buck and highly reliable. In my current system I've got a samsung 960 EVO NVME 500 GB as my system drive and a 750 GB MX 300 as a secondary drive that I run virtual machines from. Got it for $139 on prime day though it's a lot more now. Anyway, going from a spinning disk to an MX300 will be like night and day even though its not a speed daemon as SSD's go.

Here is a good reference http://www.anandtech.com/show/9799/best-ssds

Samsung and crucial are mostly the only brands I've got extensive experience with so I can't speak to the others other than online reviews.

The Crucial MX300 get better reviews than the Sandisk Ultra II, so I think I'll go with the Crucial.
Thanks all.

Crucial MX300 SATA 2.5", Kingston SUV400S3B7A, Samsung EVO 850 or 960, any would do, really. Crucial has better reviews compared to Samsung so I'd go with them if I were you,
