I have a home wireless network. Up until recently it was running smooth. Well my Netgear adapter went out. I believe the model is MA 101. Anyways, its an external usb adapter. The router is on the second floor and the particular computer is in the basement. Well, with the Netgear ma 101 adapter the network signal was excellent at all time, but it gave out. I had a PCI linksys laying around so I put it in and signal is crappy now and internet keeps cutting off. So I am in need of a new adapter that works as well as the netgear one but hopefully last longer than year and a half?

I looked into the NETGEAR WG121 because it is said to have excellent range, however I also read this adapter conflicts with athlon cpu's which is what I have.

Can you recommend a good reliable wireless adapter with excellent range, if possible external like my old one ?

Router is a Netgear too by the way, not that it matters. It doesn't support "G" ;) .

Welcome to AT Network Forum.

The card that you lost is an 802.11b USB it current value is probably few $$$, at this point in time it does not make sense to buy a new 802.11b card.

Your PCI card is probably not performing well if the Antenna is stuck behind the case.

If your PCI card has a removable Antenna you can try an external Antenna that sit above the system. An External Antenna might be of in the future too.

Otherwise, get the cheapest 802.11b USB that you can find, or upgrade your Wireless to an inexpensive 802.11g set.

Not to my knowledge.

When price is not pressing I get the Buffalo 802.11g PCI.

It is a good card with removable Antenna.

Other look for what on sale and search the Brand's Site for the Data Sheet of the Card.

After numerious advice I ended up getting a Linksys WUSB54G usb adapter. As I said, my computer is in the basement and my router on the second floor and signal is excellent.

I guess what I did find out this weekend, is that the removable antenna helps a lot as Jack said, however, I found the Linksys usb adapter at Radioshack for only $40 bucks. Ususally it's around $60 dollars, best buy price was $73. So I got a good deal on it.

If you have problems related to range, I would recommend the Linksys WUSB54G usb adapter to anyone.
