hi all,

Want to buy a notebook. I will be in UK for studies for more than a year.
I need your inputs.I will have to make this decision within next 10-12 days.

Purpose of notebook:

1. For recording lectures, taking notes and using as basic study material.
2. Engineering design (mechanical engg) softwares will be run on the system like autoCAD, pro-E and more higher end softwares which needs a decent GPU & processor.
3. Will not be plugged in AC all the time so good battery life.
4. Larger HD will be preferable.

In Simple words : the notebook should be kind of fire-n-forget: once booted I should be able to work for a decent period of time(3-4 hrs) on battery without any hassles.

Questions:

1. Which model to buy?
2. Is it better to buy it in UK or US or in India( where I m currently located)?
3. If US (coz ..less cost than UK) is there hassle free ways to ship from US to UK without major additional cost?

I request your inputs on this.

Regards,

Probably a Lenovo t400 or t500 depending on whether you prefer 14 or 15 inch screen. You probably want to pick it up in UK or possibly in India and then just bring it with you. To have it shipped from US you probably would have to pay duty/VAT/whatever and cost would be close. You want to be sure you have good warranty in UK where you will be needing it, and Lenovo business class notebooks probably have good international warranties. Make sure that the Intel GMA graphics would work with your software. Most likely it would be fine. To get a laptop with more graphics capability will also cause much more heat/power drain which defeats you goals of portability and long time of operation between charges. They usually come with xp installed which probably would be fine for you. They are between 4-5 pounds I believe which should be portable enough for you, and go for around 1000 US retail with 2gb ram and 160gb hard disk but of course you could probably get a model with more ram/larger HD for more money.

Good luck with your studies.
