Gonna switch to a mobile. Will use the desktop barton in a file server role. Already have the NIC. May not even need onboard graphics, gotta a ten yr old PCI vid card I've been wanting to do something with.

No OCing of course. I like a good reputable company with good warranty. Murphy's law is always kickin my butt and wanna be able to rma w/o a hassle if I need to.

Thanks,

Shuttle AN35N Ultra comes to mind. My AN35N Ultra happens to be doing some impromptu file-server work down at the office with my 1800+ in it. Cheap, seems to have a reputation for reliability... there you go. And with an isynchronous nVidia network controller that's bound to the Hypertransport bus, not the PCI bus. So the more RAM you heave into it, the more memory it can plug into the NIC via the Hypertransport bus, basically.

I agree with mech, the AN35 Ultra is an awesome board, especially for the price!

Another for the An35Ultra...have used almost all NforceII boards and like this one a lot...it is picky with ram though. I have found that if you have current ram or ram rated at 2.5 volts you will be good. Hope this helps.

The problem I had was that I had some Corsair XMS 3200 that was rated at 2.6 volts and it was having a tough time in the board. New ram fixed the problem. The ram was good in other boards though oddly enough...strange, but don't let that scare you off. There are little problems like that with all motherboards...really. Just deal with newegg.com and if you have any problems they will work with you to take care of it.

I just saw the blurb about warranty and you may also look at the albatron which I am running now in another computer that has a 3 year warranty

Along the lines of the Newegg thing, you can buy an extended warantee plan fron Newegg for pretty cheap and clear you mind of any potential future rma problems. If it is a real priority for you, keep that in mind.

I wouldnt recomend the soltek, their support is hard to get to, and the board you listed is sitting on a shelf right now because it only worked for about 5 months before it fried. The dang thing also wouldnt accept 166mhz bus speeds, which is what my 1700+ B should have ran stock at.

If you're not going to OC it, why are you paying a premium for a mobile barton+heatsink, instead of a cheaper retail desktop barton, which comes with a heatsink?

I think you've misunderstood, the mobile's for my gaming rig and w/b OC'd. I'm removing the desktop (which isn't a very good OC'er) from the gaming rig, and putting the desktop in a server role.

That was the easiest way to get my wife to think we needed another cpu (the mobile). :)

For the warranty Newegg charges 6% of the selling price.

Shuttle does a good job warranty-wise. AFAIK the motherboard have a 2 year warranty and Shuttle WILL deal with end-users, unlike many other companies. I've RMA'd something to Shuttle. They required dated proof of purchase, then issued an RMA number. I shipped to them and they repaired it, then shipped it back. I had to cover shipping to them, but that's normal.

I've tried to RMA stuff to Asus, Abit and Biostar in the past. Don't know if their policies have changed, but at the time I couldn't even find RMA info at the Asus website. Abit's site would say to RMA to reseller (yeah right, Mwave said "RMA to manufacturer"). Biostar says RMA to reseller, or RMA to Biostar and pay a $25 processing fee.

Go for the Shuttle, can't go wrong with quality, performance or warranty.

another vote for the an35n.

i overclocked 1 xp 2500 to 3200 speeds
1 1800 xp to 2.22 ghz
1 2400 mobile to 2.4 ghz.

its a great cheap overclocker, stable too
