Please recommend a good Cat6 ethernet cable...questions as well

Hello all,

I have DSL internet with a maximum of 500 Kb/sec download speeds. I use Cat5e cables but need a 35 foot ethernet cable right now. The prices are cheap for a Cat6 cable so why not buy one right?

Questions........

1) Can a Cat6 cable be plugged into a RJ45 jack on an old 8 year desktop or laptop?

2) Are FLAT ethernet cables better than round ones?

3) How important is shielding? Can internet speeds drop due to inferior ethernet cables?

Can someone recommend with amazon link a good ethernet cable?

A: Yes

Q: 2) Are FLAT ethernet cables better than round ones?

A: Not neccessarily, either should work for your intended purpose. I prefer rounded cables, but in my experience it makes little difference.

Q: 3) How important is shielding? Can internet speeds drop due to inferior ethernet cables?

A: Shielding comes into play if there's high voltage nearby. Such as running bundle of power cables side by side with ethernet. That being said, I see plenty of data center gear where 220v and ethernet are fed along the same paths. I wouldn't worry too much about this either, unless there's many high voltage or very high voltage cables installed right next to the ethernet.

I've been buying mostly pre-built Cat6 cables at this point in time. I currently have a 1GbE LAN, but I'm looking to move up to 5GbE NICs, and an 8x 10GbE/multi-gig switch ($500). Cat6 for that application would be preferred.

500kb? Any ethernet cable is fine.

5GbE = 5000Mbit/sec, bi-dir that would be 10000Mbit/sec total.

Pretty much at that speed and distance get the cheapest cable you find. Even at 100 feet+ I was able to easily get 10Gbe over regular Cable Matters Cat6.
