Don't need any bells and whistles. Something that works good and reliably.

Have had bad experience with Pro Form (mistake), so apart from that, please recommend anything.

Thanks in advance.

For reference, pro form and nordictrack are made by the same company, one is just positioned as a higher quality than the other.

Most of what I see these days at commercial locations are Precor I believe.

We have a Life Fitness X1. It's nice. Very quiet.

We had a Vision Fitness one before that - I forget the exact model - and it was alright, but it eventually wore out.

I would likely only purchase a commercial version of any of those products. The plastics used in the home versions aren't made for someone as big as I am....and I can't stand the feel of cheap equipment. I'd probably go with Life Fitness or Precor. If you don't have a gym membership, go to a few of the nicer hotels and ask them if you can check out their fitness centers for a few minutes to see what they have and try them out in the afternoons (when people are less-likely to be there). Actually seeing the equipment models makes a difference in understanding quality...they all look decent online.

I'd recommend not going with nordic track. I have had two of them and both developed annoying banging sounds that pretty much never went away despite repair under warranty.

Pay attention if your elliptical is supposed to be unplugged when not in use - it can shorten the lifespan of some components if you don't listen. Had that happen too.

seems like anything under 500 will give you extreme noises after use.
