Please recommend a cheap but decent DVD-ROM drive. What do I compromise with a cheap drive? I'm using an ATI Xpert2000 Pro 32 MB card.

Thanks,
Dhanu...

Speed, quietness, & reliability. Pioneer & Toshiba are probably the best choices, and they're not that much more than a "cheap" brand at similar speeds.

As pillage2001 already mentioned, I'd go for the Pioneer Slot-loading 16x DVD drive. It definitely looks cooler.

the toshiba is quieter & clonecd compatible while the pioneer comes in a tray or slot version & isn't clonecd compatible!

I think a topic on this needs added to the FAQ. We get this posted at least once a week, probably more.

Course, if people don't use the search function, I really doubt they'll check the faq...

I'd say that the toshiba is probably a better drive, but that slot load factor makes the pioneer so appealing. Its a fad, but hey it looks cool.

Pioneer vote over here.

Pioneer works with clonecd, but on some protections in doesn't work (thats what I thought).

Plus if you already have a cdburner that just image a cd with that to the HD.

I just posted a similar question in ATOT, and was directed to this post.....does the slot load of the Pioneer make it any less reliable? I was looking between teh AOpen, Toshiba and Pioneer (I think I'm going with the Toshiba, so many people have recommended it) on newegg....thanx everyone for your responses. Makes it easier for buyers like us. ^_^

Also, the Toshiba drives have pretty low DAE rates. My 12x maxes out at 9x, which is OK since I have only a 8x burner, but I can't upgrade to a 16x and do on-the-fly audio copies. I have heard that the Toshiba 12x is better than the 16x for DVD ripping but haven't tried it yet. Also, Toshibas are quieter than Pioneers.

What do you guys think of the Creative Lab drive at newegg.com?
Any idea what "Drive only" means?

Creative Lab 12X DVD ROM (32x Speed for CD ROM) Drive Model 1241E Internal EIDE *Drive Only!* No Decoder software $44 (shipped)

Thanks,
Dhanu...
