Please recommend a decent computer

Hi,

I have never purchased a commercially built computer. I have built a dozen or so.

Last night a friend asked me to recommend a new computer for him to buy. Something with a warranty. This caught me off guard because I have no idea of what is a good buy and what is not.

He wants to spend around $500 or so and he doesn't need a monitor.

Any suggestions I can recommend to him?

Thanks,

John

dell outlet is pretty good but pricing has gone to all heck lately. using my $300 Q6600 inspiron 530 with win7 ultimate - got 3 of them a few years back. never bothered to pad-mod because they are hella fast (with ssd now) still. solid. SLIC2.1 🙂 nothing fancy but who can doubt a good ole Q6600 with a pair of SSD's behind it for browsing and light office work. the ZR30w and LP3065 monitors cost WAY more than the machines themselves.

the problem with delloutlet is they raise the prices alot now - esp when they give out coupons for 15-25% off. so the deals are net zero.

Actually, the deals are still there at Dell outlet, they just sell out of the best ones fast because so many people are looking for them.

So just looking casually you might think a particular model goes for say $600, but that's because when a few that are virtually identical get listed for $500 they're gone right away.

But they are still there if you look long enough.

Instead of just looking at their website, try calling the Dell Outlet. Tell the them what you're looking for, and in what price range. Sometimes they'll have something that hasn't made it onto the website yet. If they don't have something that'll work, ask them to call or email you back when something similar comes in.

I looked at the Dell Outlet and you were right, not many bargains there right now. I'll keep checking for him and also try calling them.

I take it you all feel that Dell is what I should recommend to him. And would that include a new computer if the Dell Outlet doesn't work out for him?

Thanks again.

John

Dell or HP or any company with good warranty. It takes more time on the phone to get service from Dell than it should, but they do come through in the end.
Don't have as much experience with HP but I wouldn't hesitatate to recommend HP.

Just keep an eye out for deals on deal sites.
