Please recommend a cpu cooler for me

Hi all,

I'm using the following mobo with a i5 2400 cpu - ASRock

The stock intel hsf is not cutting it. PC kept overheating and was showing like 92 degrees in bios. Damn near burning out my cpu. I've had to turn off turboboost to stabalize the system for now.

As the board is small, I'm looking for something cheap that will adequately cool the cpu, but not block my vga (gtx 770) or dimm slots as there's only two. Case is a standard mid-size case btw.

If you have something available that may suit my needs, please feel free to send me a pm as well.
 
There is no TIM out there that makes a big enough difference to make the stock cooler perform noticeably better. Check out the Cooler Master hyper 212 EVO. They're cheap and perform as well if not better than coolers twice their price.
 
Is it throttling or not?

Normally it would just throttle when it got too hot, not crash.

Typically you hear the CPU fan going bananas and see the CPU running slow when it gets too hot.
 
You don't need an aftermarket cooler for i5-2400. It probably needs new thermal paste and clean out/vacuum dust buildup from your case and stock HSF.
 
The stock cooler for the 2400 should have the copper core and greater number of fins vs the lower rated all aluminum SB cooler, and it should be okay if you are not overclocking the chip.
 
Btw, I'm using some cooler master tim that came with my hyper 212 evo that's installed on my main rig. That thing is awesome. Not sure I would want to run it on this mb though.

How can I tell if it's throttling? All I know is I just upgraded it to Windows 10, and this started happening. Durring the final stages of setup, it would just shutdown. So, I went into the bios to check hw monitoring, and cpu was at 92. I opened up the case, and can smell the hsf burning up. It seemed to be fine running Win 7 honestly. I might throw 7 back on via another ssd, and see if there's a difference in cpu and heat usage between the two.

Perhaps the fan on the HSF has burned out or is failing?

That may be what you smell, not the CPU burning up?

The CPU is not going to burn up, it's going to throttle and then shut down long before it burns up.

I would suspect a CPU fan problem first.

Intel XTU will tell you if the CPU is throttling.

92C is hot, but not "oh my god" hot.
 
better thermal spread would certainly make a difference... the stock HSF should be plenty adequate for that processor. should sit around 45c
 
Everyone here, is essentially correct.

But to mitigate it happening again, or even get more efficiency out of your CPU, I would recommend buying a new cheaper cooler ($25), which will offer you both better cooling and a new TIM.

I have a uatx pcb with an external gpu card. This cooler fits fine and cools the whole motherboard.
