Hi everyone. I have a limited budget but I'm not expecting a professional quality monitor, just something I won't have to replace very soon that serve my basic purposes.

I'm not totally opposed to a 24" monitor, so if you guys feel like that's really a much better option for me, please say so. Thank you for all your help!

Uses: Gaming, Movies, some reading and web surfing.
Budget: No more than $250
Other requirements: Nothing really.

So far I've been looking at these three

Some of those reviews say the actual response time is about 10 ms, is that really fast enough to game with?
What you're referring to is the total display lag which is only 8.3ms, according to tftcentral, & well within the acceptable range of 16ms. The G2G response time however is 4ms, which is twice as fast as most IPS panels that generally have 8ms as response time. In short you won't notice much of a lag on this monitor or any other VA based panel.

Ah I see, thank you.

Is there any reason why you would recommend the Benq over the AOC IPS I linked here?

Also, there seem to be a lot of offerings from Viewsonic and Asus in the same price range and size as the Benq. I'm wondering if there's something special about that Benq over most other LED's?

Obviously, I don't know very much about monitors. I know that in theory IPS are supposed to look better, but that's about it. Thank you for your help!

A couple of reasons ~
I have a Benq so a little biased towards them but more importantly alot of IPS based models come with 6bit+FRC panels which don't produce native 8bit images, unlike this AMVA panel which has true 8bit color depth, so in essence you're getting better colors, contrast & response time on Benq. There are however true 8bit IPS panels as well but one has to search the particular model on review sites to see if they offer 8bit color depth natively or not, really cumbersome especially if the display hasn't been reviewed thoroughly by a reputed site.
Also, if I chose to go with 24" would you recommend this?

As for this it's a TN based panel with excellent response time & minimal display lag, as compared to IPS, so you'll have to compromise heavily because the image quality goes down a couple of notches. I usually prefer & recommend VA based panels because they offer a compromise in terms of picture quality, contrast & response time as compared to the two extremes (IPS/TN) but to really gauge a display (somewhat) objectively you'll have to put it alongside another monitor, a luxury only some of us can afford in realtime.

As for this particular model it indeed is pretty good but has a minor problem with overdrive ~

So if you aren't too concerned with a few drawbacks, on any of these monitors, you'll be fine with either one (this AOC or that Benq model I listed earlier) & usually it's just a matter of personal preference in choosing between two quality displays.

Damn R0H1T I'm glad you posted in here. I'm definitely leaning towards the Benq you recommended then. Just a few more questions if you don't mind.

Does having a refresh rate over 60 hz make a difference? How so? I can't seem to get a straight answer.

Is there any benefit to eye sight in terms of using a 24" monitor over a 27"? 27 is pretty big, I'm wondering if I'd feel like I was looking at the sun, even if I was far enough away haha. Monitors have given me eye strain before.

Is there any reason to wait? Is something big coming out soon? I have an AMD card so I don't know what I could get out of G-Sync, or if G-Sync is even going to be that important?

Thanks a lot guys!

Not really, tbh a constant stutter free experience at 60Hz is better than x fps more at 120Hz & this is why we have tech like the Vsync, free sync, Gsync et al. The higher refresh rate also requires more GPU power, roughly 2x if you want more fps with displays like the BenQ RL2455HM. Now I'm not saying that you need to run games at 100fps on such displays but it's no point going for higher refresh rates if you get better/smoother experience at 60Hz but since I haven't used such displays I can't share any personal experience in that regard.

No, the display resolution & DPI scaling matters more but you can partially get over the 27" big screen problem by placing the monitor two (or more) feet away, from your normal seating position, if it ain't an impossibility. I have a 22" full HD display on my desktop set a foot away & I occasionally use my 32" 1080p HDTV with my laptop, set five feet away, but even a couple of feet away is fine for the HDTV as I've gotten used to it. The point I'm trying to make is that a bigger screen ideally should be set at something like two feet from you, the distance varies person to person, but once you get used to it you can set it nearer or farther as you deem fit in the future but yes it takes sometime to get used to at first.
Is there any reason to wait? Is something big coming out soon? I have an AMD card so I don't know what I could get out of G-Sync, or if G-Sync is even going to be that important?
Gsync limits you to TN panels atm & will always require the use of Nvidia GPU's in the future. It will undoubtedly make for a better gaming experience but ultimately will limit your GPU/monitor choice & it'll always be a more expensive proposition. The thing for you to consider is whether to get a good monitor now or wait for better/inexpensive monitors with Gsync to be introduced, at some point in time in the future, & be tied with Nvidia for x number of years or if you prefer Nvidia (& won't defect to AMD for the lifetime of this display) it makes you're job that much easier.

R0H1T, does Benq offer a 24" version? I can't seem to find one. I think 27 is just going to be too big for the space I have available.
