2400-M should be a bit cheaper but should perform as well, considering the freely adjustable mutiplier. $77

Motherboard: most people like the Abit NF7-S since it's a good mix of price and features. You'll have most of the high-end features: SATA, 1394, etc.

Case: the Sonata is supposed to make stuff quiet, but I don't own one. I don't knkow.

Optical: whatever is on sale at OfficeMax etc. Usually the boxes have good drives inside: Liteons, Optorites, etc.

Ram: 1GB is a lot. Maybe 512 will get you by. Right now, Kingston is selling PC2700 valueram 512MB for $55 (see one of the sticky threads in Hot Deals). Very cheap, but it's a risk getting it to PC3200. From my experience though, the only stick of ValueRam 2700 I tried got to 3200 very easily without voltage boosting needed, and another stick of PC2100 got to about 173MHz at CAS 2.0 default voltage. I'm vouching that this should be a good way to save $.

Video: See if you can get a Radeon 9700/9800 or a Pro at that price. It's possible, especially if you get a used 9700 Pro on the forums here.

I agree with most things said above.
CPU: I'd still go with the 2500. Only twenty bucks more.
Mobo: Abit is a fine choice
Case: If you are interested in the quiet features of the Sonata, go with the SLK3700BQE or the SLK3700AMB. The BQE has an "S" model psu that should be quieter and it has more power too.
Optical: NEC 2500A. Great drive and cheap. Check out the user rating on Newegg and here.
RAM and Video: Ionizer said it well. 9700/9800 for 150 may be hard to find but is a worthwhile upgrade over 9600 or comparable geforce.

mwave has the Sony 8X DVD burner OEM version w Nero for only $112.
I would be wary of buying the cheapest at Officemax or Staples since you don't know what you are getting until you open it. It is true you may luck out with a Liteon, but I recently found pure junk in an IOMagic box and had to return it to Staples.
I do like the NEC 2500a which is under $100 at Newegg.
Put your money into RAM, Corsair or Kingston or another quality brand and you wont regret it. You can oc pc3200 if it is good quality, but if you want to push it, go with 3500 or 4000.
