Ok, taking a look at my signature it's been a little while since Ive upgraded but now its time since ive recently moved to Vista. Anyway, my 1 gig of ram just hasn't been cutting it recently especially since I just installed COD4.. normally I coudl run it almost maxed with XP, but not Vista so I know its time to move on.

I wont be OC'ing
I dont need onboard audio, ethernet,
on board firewire would be good though, but not necessary

I would like something in the 50-65 range if possible. I can get some ram on my own, but this is a present from someone, which si why the budget. So what do you think? I think Ill start with mobo and ram and then get processor next so do I have to worry about socket A with a new mobo or is that still the same?

Thanks

KN8 SLI is not Socket A but Socket 939. The current socket is Socket AM2 (the DDR2 version of Socket 939) and AM2+ (for Barcelona core processors; Phenom 9000 series quad-core, Phenom 8000 series tri-core, or Athlon 6000 series dual-core, Q1 2008). AM2 (AM2+) processors are compatible with AM2+ (AM2) mbs. From various information, the performance of Athon 6000 may not be much different from the current Athlon 64 X2. So a socket AM2 mb and a Athlon 64 X2 processor is a good choice right now.

NVIDIA chipsets for AM2 at the low end section are: nForce 520 (MCP65S), nForce 560 (MCP65GT), GeForce 6100 and nForce 430 (MCP61P) and good ATX mb based on them are:

abit AN52
BIOSTAR TF520 A2
BIOSTAR TF560 A2+
GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3

Renethx.. thanks a lot for the quick lesson.. I was in need of an upgrade.. im looking into those recommendations now.

Question though.. obviously my next step (for instance im looking at the BIOSTAR TF520 A2) would be the processor.. sinec, im assuming, DDR1 will still run in DDR 2 just at ddr1 speeds? Or will i have to get ram at the same time?

Thanks

Hi,

DDR1 and DDR2 are not compatible, so you'll have to purchase new memory along with new board and CPU. However, right now memory prices are very very low.

Wow..you're right Starfiresg...and I suppose every board will have OB audio as well... what I would like though is firewire and not 6 usb slots or how ever many.... I dont see firewire on most of these, but I can get a separate card I guess..

Taking another look I did see 1394 on the Gigabyte I guess..although I cant find anything slightly less inexpensive that the GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3...

Haha... Ive had one intel based pc in my life...Im just not as familiar with it anymore... i noticed the GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3 isnt bad, since it has firewire, but I know there are others cheaper (not that 75 is bad)
