New MyDoom worm targets RIAA, Microsoft
Washington
February 25, 2004

A new version of the MyDoom worm is programmed to launch attacks from infected computers on Microsoft as well as the music industry's main US trade association, an anti-virus software company said yesterday.

The MyDoom.F worm "contains a malicious payload which attempts to launch denial of service attacks against Microsoft and the Recording Industry Association of America," Sophos said.

The new worm is the latest variant of the MyDoom, which was the worst outbreak in cyberspace.

MyDoom.F, which uses a wide variety of different subject lines, message bodies and attachment names, also can delete graphic files, text documents, spreadsheets and databases it finds on infected computers, and opens a "backdoor" on infected computers that could allow hackers to take control of the machines, Sophos said.

ANti-virus firm F-Secure said in addition to the distributed denial-of-service attack, the worm also tried to delete several file types from the victim's hard drive such as pictures, movies and Office documents.

The anti-virus firm Network Associates said the worm "contains its own (email) engine for constructing messages and attempts to perform a Denial of Service (DOS) attack against www.microsoft.com and www.RIAA.com and contains a malicious payload for deleting files".

It said the virus had been found in 60 companies and seen in parts of Asia, Europe, and Latin America and Canada and the US.

The original Mydoom.A worm, discovered late last month, infected up to one million computers worldwide in just a few days, clogging the internet and delaying the delivery of email.
