As many of you have become aware by my occasional mentionings, I am leaving six months from now to hike the 2600+ mile PCT (Pacific Crest Trail ? http://www.pcta.org) with a friend. What probably isn?t as well known is that I?m hiking the trail for a cause: diabetes.

I was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes (formerly called juvenile-onset diabetes) over five and a half years ago at the age of 15. A lack of knowledge of diabetes nearly killed me; I became despondent, separated myself from friends and family, and felt an increasing sense of apathy toward life. Gradually, through persistence and education (thanks to the American Diabetes Association and Children?s Hospital), I learned to accept life with diabetes. Now it?s time for me to give something back. I want all of the 15-year olds who don?t understand this new world of diabetes to know one thing: diabetes does not control your life. You control your diabetes. A completely normal life was once thought impossible to live while dealing with the rigors of diabetes; my hike is to show that this is no longer true. This hike is my goal: the Hike for Diabetes.

I?m writing this to all of you (most of whom I consider my friends) to ask for your help with this. Since this is a benefit hike, I'm trying to raise as much funding as possible before I begin the hike. I am not trying to make anyone feel obligated to donate, but instead to offer the opportunity to anyone who would want to help out. This hike is a non-profit event and any proceeds from the hike will be donated to the American Diabetes Association.

If anyone is interested in hiking any segments of the PCT with me, please email me; support is something I can always accept more of, in any form.

Thanks in advance for any and all of your support. Comments and questions are welcome.

Planning on around 4 months, give or take a few weeks. Depending on hiking pace, weather...so many variables. :) I'll post our website as soon as I get it up - it'll have all the info about the hike; distance per day, and hopefully update pictures, etc., while we're on the trail.

My father had diabetes, except he was diagnosed at the age of 40. I know how his life totally changed, and how careful he had to be every day. I just wanted to tell you that I think what you are doing is absolutely wonderful, and I wish you all the luck in the world. If I was anywhere near where you will be hiking, I would be right out there to join you.

Thats a pretty ambitious schedule over 20 miles/day with no zero days. I assume that you are following the Ray way of hiking based on the schedule. Good luck and happy trails.

Denali,

I'm not following Ray's word as gospel, but I'm definitely going with a light pack, somewhere around sub-15lbs before food and water. It should make 20 miles/day easier, though not entirely easy. :) And we will probably have a few zero-mile days, when we enter towns, etc.

Wow that's great to hear.
I'm a type 1 myself diagnosed at 16. I consider myself a pretty avid hiker as well. Usually get around 30-40 a month in somewhere. The last thru-hike I did was a 3mo continental divide hike about 3yrs ago. It was a great experience and something to definately be proud of the rest of your life. It will teach you many things about yourself that many people may never understand.
Good luck

Avatar,

You did the CDT? That's awesome. I really want to do that one, but have to set aside some more time. 4mo for the PCT (hoping to do it in 3.5 actually) is hard enough for right now, but well worth it. :)

How were your blood sugars?

That was my one main worry the whole trip, but I ended up balancing it fairly well. I usually ran about 20 points average lower than my standard home readings. I'm fairly active and try to get at least 10 miles of running or 15 on my bike everyday to prepare me for the shock I get when I go on an extended hike.

The part I worried most about was not letting my insulin get to hot. I ended up using a water pack. Basically I made it myself with ziplock bags and keeping cold water in it whenever we stopped.

For most people if you are used to a pretty active life you shouln't have too much trouble. Thank god for powerbars and OJ though, good to have on hand sometimes after that long haul up on some of those climbs.

Yeah, I'm actually thinking of going with the Snickers route; more calories per ounce compared to Clif Bars. Either Snickers or Clif, and probably Gu shots for Glucose. Did you carry Glucagon or anything like that with you?

I carried a glu pen in my side pack and made sure everyone knew what was up in case something happened. Usually though if I could feel myself dropping I used these generic Glucose tablets that I found at walmart. They came in a plastic tube like you carry film in so it was better than worrying about a bag getting wet or whatever and I still could use the container for other stuff later on.

The most important thing is to definately let everyone else with you know what's up and what to watch for. I wore a med chain just in case.

Good luck

I'm hiking with a friend, so that should help. It's six months off, and I'm already getting pretty excited. Well, I'm off to bed, but check out my site and let me know how it looks. I'm tired as hell right now but will work on it more tomorrow...

Site is now up and running. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a web-hosting company? I need something cheap, but decent service-wise...and will need domain registration as well.

Are there any places that offer cheap/free webhosting for non profit orgs? :)
