anyways yesterday i think i had a power surge, or something but anyways my computer was completely dead. like no power supply in it at all. after putting a new one, that i just bought, in today the motherboard lights up when all the power is in. however when i push the power nothing happens at all so now i think it may be a motherboard problem. any tips appreciated

update: ive now changed my power supply, processor, and motherboard and still nothing. when i turn the power supply on the leds on the motherboard light up. when i turn the power on the motherboard the fans spin for a second and nothing! agh! maybe i bought a bad power supply or something... any help appreciated

Aha! I knew I wasn't alone! This happened to me recently when I put my PC in a new case. At first the PC would keep randomly rebooting and eventually it would only switch on for 1/2 second or so before turning off.

Thought it was a PSU problem, but it wasn't, it was the mobo. The problem is in the way the mobo is communicating with the power supply - eg, both components 'work' they just aren't aware of each others' existence.

The funny thing is, all I did was remove the power cable from the PSU and mobo and take out the CMOS battery, reset the CMOS switch and leave the PC overnight. By the time I plugged it back in in the morning it had fixed itself.

I guess you just need to completely wipe all the settings from the motherboard and get it back to factory settings.

That's a simplistic answer to a complex issue. The more complete version of actually how your PC problem was resolved is that during the night, while you slept...
The PC Troll fixed your rig

well tried that, i think my original power supply is broken, and i think my motherboard is broken. or my old and new power supply are broken and the motherboards ok...

Before I have to come and fix it for u....make sure you put the heatsink the right way. When u put it the other way, that type of problem u are getting happens.

Just a thought anyway since I wish to help a fellow Anandtech member.

If the computer turns on for a second with fans spinning and then shuts right off, definitely a power related issue somewhere. Could also be the CPU heatsink not sitting flush on the processor.

Here's a checklist for you try out:

If computer starts up normally but beeps are heard, then it's either your video card or ram.

If computer starts up normally but no beeps are heard, yet fans keep spinning, then your CMOS may be corrupted or your power supply is set on the wrong voltage.

If computer fails to power up at all, not even fans spinning, then that's a power supply problem.

If computer starts up, shuts down really quick afterward, and a bright red led on your motherboard lights up, then your CPU heatsink is not sitting flush and the motherboard fail-safe is going off for heat.

If computer starts up, shuts down after a period of time, and a bright red led on your motherboard lights up, then your auxillary power connector to the motherboard may be loose.

If computer starts up, shuts down immediately, and then a hissing sound comes from the power supply, then your power supply is overheating or set on the wrong voltage.

If computer starts up, demons fly out, and a gate to hell opens up, then you are short on shotgun ammunition and must reload to get back to marine HQ.

Hope any of this helps before you get face to face assistance.

ok how bout i get the problem that the CPU heatsink isnt sitting flush except im using water cooling, also it worked before i dont see why that would be causing the problem now it was just a random day after not tweaking with settings or changing out hardware for at least a few months
