No hiding. We all know where this thread is going with @ss clowns like you leading the charge. This is just par for the course. We had a white dude tossed off Patco last week for the same thing. Its no big deal. But right away like the lowlife dog you are, you start with the off color stuff.

lol you are the only racist in this thread.

i took his comment as a joke, as did most people in this thread (probably everybody but you actually).

Post "jokes" that skirt the racist line at your own peril. Be prepared for serious consequences, like time off from this forum. But don't worry, if you end up banned, it'll just be our little joke, ha ha.

people throw around "racist" far too often.

If you read the headline of the story, it's not racist to think that there's a high probability she was black. People should treat "racist" like a slur and think before using it.

To me, seeing people reinforce stereotypes can be pretty funny.

How do you get high probability of black from "Woman's cell-phone use halts train"?

There is no law against people using their phones on the train. Although annoying, they should have minded their business and let her talk if she felt like it.

A) She was in a quiet car. Talking is automatically just a no-no. Also, loud kids are typically banned from such cars... which is why I love the quiet car.
B) The train is owned by Amtrak. It is NOT a public place. You are only allowed to use whatever device at THEIR discretion. If you are causing a disruption, they have every right to kick you right the hell off.

I've ridden trains for quiet a while now between NJ Transit and Amtrak. I hate people who don't have the common courtesy to at least talk QUIETLY on the phone. Loud jerks like the aforementioned woman on the train ruin the experience of a quiet, comfortable train ride. Even worse when they blow up at passengers for politely suggesting that they STFU. I hope she felt a little more than just "disrespected". Jerk...

::EDIT:: Also applies to movie theaters. I'm NOT looking forward to the day when they have cell phone service in all flights..

You can "think" what you wish, but you are not welcome to post such racist thoughts on these forums, on the order of Mr. Anand lal Shimpi.

This may be a ban-worthy offense but i'll out and say it. I've ridden trains (as mentioned NJ Transit, Amtrak and PATH) for at least 6 years and (once again this has been MY personal experience on trains), I can safely say that African-American and Hispanic people are statistically the majority who are involved in disruptive situations. This includes:
a) Talking loudly (i.e. can be heard throughout the car) on the phone
b) Talking loudly AND constantly for EXTENDED periods (>45 minutes) on non-emergency issues (generally gossip)
c) Talking/yelling loudly amongst a group of friends

Now, don't get me wrong. I've seen PLENTY of people from other backgrounds (white, indian, oriental) also be loud and obnoxious but my experience dictates that they're typically in the statistical minority when taking the three criteria into account; also they're usually drunk. On the flip side, there's also plenty of African Americans and Hispanic people who are quiet and respectful as well. Soo... yeah...

Don't be loud and obnoxious and be aware that there's other people on the train besides yourself who don't want to hear your s**t. "If you don't like it, you can move" or "Fuck you. I'll do what I want" are not appropriate responses by the offender in these situations.

::EDIT:: Looks like ban hammer's coming down pretty hard on this thread. I'm just gonna assume i'm banned for this. :p Sorry for the "disrespect" :D

Why should it ban-worthy? I've also been on trains and buses in NJ and agree with all of your points. You spoke the truth. Stereotypes exist for a reason and when they get proven correct people treat it like a crime.

GOOD. Its about time something like this happened. She got what she deserved.

There is no law against people using their phones on the train. Although annoying, they should have minded their business and let her talk if she felt like it.

First off, have some common courtesy. Cell phone courtesy isn't that difficult, and some people just don't get it.

Secondly - she was in the quiet car. You are not allowed to talk on a cell phone in the quiet car. It exists so passengers don't have to put up with loudmouths like her.

An Amtrak official said a number of passengers complained Beard was being disrespectful during her prolonged phone conversations on the train. Salem police reported she had been on the phone non-stop since the train pulled out of Oakland, Calif. 16 hours earlier.

While this is an extreme example, social etiquette expert and instructor Jodi Blackwood said too many people don’t exercise basic courtesy when it comes to using their phones.

She said when people speak too loudly and have personal conversations in public places they don’t always realize the message they’re sending.

“What does that say to them? It says that you’re only thinking of yourself and that you are only aware of what you need and what you are doing and you are a less considerate person,” Blackwood said.

Amtrak does have a policy that riders can’t use cell phones in designated “quiet cars,” like the one in which Beard was riding.

Sums it up pretty well.

if you are banned for simply stating your experiences ... wow.

I agree but these forums are not public domain. Much like my comments on commuters' "rights" (see how I referred to the original subject there?), the admins can ban me for whatever reason they see fit and i'm cool with that since they run this shindig. Personally, I don't think something's "racist" until there are derogatory comments or actions related to a race and I don't think i said anything particularly derogatory but meh. Ke sera. Just preparing for the worst.

NOTE TO ADMINS: I have no complaints about the admins or how they run the forums. I'm pleased with the way they're run. Please don't ban me :)

See this has been my complaint for years. You guys are so full of it. This happened in Salem Oregon, quoting Wiki

The racial makeup of the city was 83.1% White, 1.3% African American, 1.5% Native American, 2.4% Asian, 0.5% Pacific Islander, 7.9% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.6% of the population.

So explain how in your wisdom you just assumed she was black. The only reason you assumed she was black was because it was posted here. All they every do is post stories about what black people did. But what gets me ticked is it goes from not the incident, oh know, then we have read some circus clown's comments on black people in general like Connoisseur. You guys have turned the board into a white racist cesspool. That really is the truth in a nutshell. Every week 2-3 of these threads get posted and like maggots on dead flesh you gorge yourself on racial overtones and slick oververt racial taunts.

The very first line of the OP was "Lakeysha halts train". I don't think it's particularly racist/bigoted to assume the nature of the passenger as "Lakeysha" is typically an African-American name... just like if the passenger's name was Krishna Patel I think it would be a fairly accurate assumption that the offender was indian.

The train was STOPPED in Salem Oregon and after 16 hours of talking on the phone, who knows where it really originated and what the racial makeup of the originating city is. Statistic fail.

I have my own factual experiences based on real life experiences. Being factual is not a crime. If we speculate on "Layesha's" race of and end up being correct, what do you want from us? Should we ignore facts and common sense as to not appear like "circus clowns?".

The fucking article says so.

First:

Salem police say in a statement that 39-year-old Lakeysha Beard of Tigard was arrested on disorderly conduct charges Sunday afternoon.

She lives in Tigard you fucking halfwits.

Next, she got on in Oakland California:

Police say she had reportedly been on the phone almost continuously since boarding in Oakland, Calif., even though operators had repeatedly asked riders not to use their cell phones.

I'm not even going to bother linking to Oakland's "diversity" statistics.

You people are fucking retarded when you argue, you know that? ESPECIALLY when Classy is involved. Jesus. He's one of the most racist people I've ever talked with. He's significantly racist against white people and it shows every time he posts.

OMG a black lady with a stereotypical name was stereotypically disrespecting everyone around her while stereotypically coming from Oakland while stereotypically being loud and obnoxious while stereotypically breaking the rules? RACISM!! YOU WHITES HATE US BLACKS!!

OMG a white person talked to a black person? RACIST. WHY DO YOU WHITES HATE US?!

I don't know why you idiots bother arguing with Classy. There's no way you can break his racist attitude.

He was right.

There's only one real racist on this board and you prove yourself that guy time and time again.

Now you and I both know that when it comes to you what I think and how much I care about your posts or opinions.

So just give it a rest.......................

HA HA. Didn't even see that part. Man everyone's a critic.

Honestly, I think issues like this (rudeness in specific social settings) boils down to social/economic class culture more than anything. Virtually all of the people i've seen who are outstandingly rude in trains have the general appearance of being lower middle class or worse. i make this assessment based on: a) MY opinion of clothing/appearance related to wealth and b) which stops these passengers get on in the train (i.e. crappier towns).

I find that typically, the more well-off/comfortable the passengers appear, the more they generally tend to stay quiet or at least be respectful of their conversations. MY theory is that middle class and wealthier people are more socially aware and like to avoid the embarrassment of a confrontation which could degrade their "status" amongst random strangers. Less wealthy or "blue collar" people don't have this particular fear. The one MAJOR exception to my theory is teenage girls... they all suck regardless of race.

::EDIT:: Note that I could totally be full of shit. I'm not a psychologist, sociologist, anthropologist or statistician. Just a man with some thoughts he wanted to share on a message board with total strangers.

this happens on many forums, some people are so quick to pull out the race card (especially when it comes to African Americans... never happens with any other race). They take things way too seriously and read into things waaaay too much.

I don't know how people grow up with such thin skin (for a lack of better words)... I guess it goes along with the whole Pussification of America. The shitty part is, we have to cater towards them, otherwise they whine, bitch and moan.

I'll stop defending the rest of the forum when you stop attacking anyone and everyone for racism and throwing the race card like it's still the 70's.

The plain and simple truth is, dude was RIGHT about his assumption. Stuff that in your pipe and smoke it.
