Hello to all,
Very nice to meet you. I've a serious problem. I believe you
can help me.

(Note:SORRY -Why i write these much is to give the clear idea about my
problem).

I've an 1TB HITACHI SATA INTERNAL HDD. But 'm using it as external (put it in an external case, connect via usb). 5 days back it accidently fell from the chair. But the thing is, the hdd didn't hit the ground- before hitting I caught it (at that time it was in running condition). But the hdd is well shaked. After that when I connect it to my pc/lap,the hdd is running but it is not accessible by the system. After 1 minute system will show either 'not accessible' or 'format drive'. Not showing its properties also (ie: hdd is running but I can't enter to it). A small creepy noise also appear after this incident (this noise occur only when I connect it to pc/lap, other time no unwanted noises). I think the noise is from the board of the hdd or near from it. I tried directly in pc- no effect.

My valuable data, movies & music collection around 600gb is in this hdd. If the files are missing its equal to killing me. So please please please help me with your valuable ideas to come out of this tragedy. I want to correct the hdd or recover the files from it. (Another one thing is my pc is IDE not SATA).

hi backup your data to another drive. all it takes is a fist pound to the desk top disrupt an active external drive and permanently damage it. ask me how i know. 😉

If its not showing up its a phsyical problem.

If you can get Windoz to see it you can use data recovery software .. thx

When hard drives are off, they have a very high shock resistance. When they are powered on however, the tolerance is very low.
You've basically got a dead drive.
You might think your data is worth alot until you find out how much physical data recovery is.

It seems the drive platters, inside the hard drive, are most likely fine. It is the arm motor that has probably been damaged. It may be possible for someone with an oxygen clean room to open the drive and replace the arm drive and motor with a working one from another drive.

I have not opened a hard drive before though, so am not sure if it is possible.

It seems to me there is little hope for your drive except at a professional data recovery company, and they can be expensive.

This will teach you to have backups. I had something similar happen to a friend. They were drunk, and knocked their 500GB external drive full of music off onto the floor.

STOP trying to use the drive, running it right now might further the damage. You physically broke your drive, catching it before it hit the ground doesn't stop it from breaking. It still suffered acceleration and deceleration while operating; most likely the heads crashed into the platters and both were damaged.

Your only recourse (and its a crapshot) is to pay for professional data recovery, it used to be thousands of dollars but last I heard it runs about 300$. If you are lucky they would be able to recover most of it. I believe the administrator rubycon can recommend some specific companies for data recovery.

Check the link in my signature for how to protect your data in the future.

I'd re-think how much the movies and music are worth to you.
At the worst, assuming you owned all of those things legally, it would only take some time to re-rip everything from your CDs and DVDs.

If there was truly irreplaceable stuff like personal photos or emails there, though, then you'll have to fork over some cash for data recovery.

As others have said, the sudden g-forces the drive sustained when knocked over most likely damaged the drive physically.

While not the same circumstances, I also had a drive fail on me a while back. It was a 500GB WD with a bunch of data on it. I ended up paying about $500 to recover the data. Ironically, I received a copy of Paragon Drive Backup Professional (from a wilders security forum drawing) after that happened, so I've been working toward regularly making backups now.

Funny how it takes such an event to get some of us to do what we should be doing regardless.

Download hiron boot cd

http://soft.softoogle.com/ap/hiren-s-bootcd-download-6916.shtml

Run Hitachis utility on it
RUN SPINRITE ON IT.

tHEN USE ONE OF THE PARTITION Repair software on it.

his drive physically broke, it fell while running and that made it stop working. Partition repair will either do nothing or do more damage.
He needs to take it to a professional recovery service which will physically fix the drive (as best as they can) then copy whatever data is on it to a new drive.
