My friend just bought a linksys rounter and has Century tel DSL with a Westell DSL modem. He can connect to the router to configure it but he can't get it to connect to the internet. His modem shows no "connection" light.... ANy ideas??

Please, very urgent

I think it has something to do with the router not connecting to the modem. He can connect fine when he hooks his modem up to his server comptuer like he had it before.

ANy suggestions??

thanks

Either a) he has the modem plugged in to the wrong port on the router, or b) he's using the wrong cable, IE: a crossover, when should be straight-thru, or vice versa.

Ok, he has connetivity with the modem now, he just can't connect. IT shows some light action on the modem but just doesn't connect.

Reset the router. Push the little button on the front once, quickly. If you hold it in too long, you'll set it back to default.

If your using DSL, most providers use PPPoE which is Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet. This is a login to verify the users authenticity. Make sure this is set.

Also, make sure DHCP services is enabled on all the machines that want to connect. This is done through the administrative options of NT and 2000. ME, 98, and 95 you don't have to do this.

The router is also set to automatically run a DHCP server, make sure that a) your computers are set to DHCP. or b) manually set the IP on each computer to that which the router would give it. Also set your default gateway and dns servers.

Your best bet is A until you get more familiar with the networking scheme.

The modem has to be plugged into the WAN port on the back of the router as well.

You will also need to setup your IP, DNS, Gateway info on the first page of your router configuration. It is recommended that you leave the subnet mask, and LAN ip address. Also do not filter any ports until you are sure of what you are doing.

Hope this helps...

i have westell wirespeed modem, linksys 4 port router. i think his service might be using pppoe. does he have a login/pw that he uses when he connects the modem directly to the server? if so, then he needs to configure pppoe in the router config.

Mike, not flamin here, but you never mentioned that you had been into networking for eight years. How was anyone to know? Have you updated the router at all? Which firmware does your friend have with his router? He may want to go to an earlier one, a more stable. Or possibly a newer one if it turns out to be pretty old. Good luck.

No worries man!!, well, his router has the newest stable firmware (It actually came with it) I'm just running out of ideas here if you know what I mean. I know this works. One of my other friends (in seattly) uses this EXACT setup, so I know it works... But he is a moron and is never home so he can't help me.

Any more ideas??

thank you guys for your help with this

supposedly you're supposed to power down the modem and router, then turn on the modem first and then the router. i haven't tried it yet... i just ripped out my dumb router and i'm using raspppoe and ics. good thing i got it for $50... i think i'm going to sell it.

moral of the story: if you use pppoe, don't get a linksys router.

alright, since you've already been networking for 8 years, forgive me if i'm making a stupid suggestion. i don't know which Westell DSL modem you have, but the one i have comes with a cat3 cable instead of a cat5. i've never actually tried to use it until i got a Linksys router. well, i tried to set the router up for like 3 hours and couldn't get the damn thing to work. then i noticed the "link" light is off on the DSL modem, whereas the "WAN" light is on on the router (didn't even notice that until 3 hours later cuz the WAN light is on the whole time on the router). so i guess for reason the router recognize the cat3 cable but the modem doesn't.
anyway, went out and bought a new cat5 cable and it all works. i was so pissed off at stupid Westell. should've kept my Alcatel one.
i guess your problem wouldn't be that simple, but that's a suggestion.
