the only ones who usually come trick or treating are those with adults who look pretty responsible... not so sure they'd carry eggs and TP with them...

That wont stop them from dropping trow and shitting all over their hands and smearing it on your car windows, now will it?

are they gonna go home and tell mommy that's just chocolate all over dad's hands?

note "Please no Trick-or-Treaters. The babies are sleeping."

What else can you do? Just be straight forward.

And then sit on the porch with a shotgun for emphasis.

good reason isn't it? I posted it on the doorbell.
put a bowl of candy out to appease the little demons or you might get "tricked".

Until oh, I don't know, the third kid comes along and steals the entire thing. :p

Apparently everyone here was a total asshole douchebag when they were a kid. We never took the whole bowl of candy when people left one out, we never egged/TPed/whatevered someone?s house/car if they weren?t giving out candy, and we kept the fruit the old lady used to give us

I've never in my life gotten a trick or treater before sundown, it starts at dusk. The folk who are giving out candy leave their lights on and those who are not stay dark and the kids/parents know the difference.

In my sisters area NOBODY does actual door-to-door trick or treating anymore. Everyone that gives out candy sets up in the school parking lot. Parents bring their kids, they make one lap of the cars and everyone is done in an hour. It's safe and efficient, but it seems so wrong. It used to be that the kids with the strongest legs and the most willpower got the most candy. Now everyone gets the same, there's no benefit to being better than the others. Of course as that's the way the grading system operates inside the school I guess that it's reasonable that that's how candy works outside the school.

Apparently you never went trick-or-treating then, you just went treating.

LOL.. do they have these?

Yeah that's awesome! I would love one to put on the lawn of a dickhead neighbor down the street. :D Hell, just print one of your own...

OP, if neighborhood kids and young adults a big threat, TP/egg your house, is that really an area you'd want to raise your kids in? Get a loaded paintball gun, at least, just so you can retaliate if they pull any funny business.

If you want to be stupid and overly technical then no I didn?t, but then by that definition the vast majority of kids never go trick or treating either.

So you have a lot of people that want candy and a few people that simply want to be total asshole douchebags.

My brother's neighborhood did that parking lot thing last year from 6-8 PM. Neighbors warned him that many of the older kids will make the rounds, stash what they collected, then come back through again with a new empty bag over and over. So he made a little sign that said "Double treats after 8 PM if your hand is stamped". Every kid not with an adult agreed to get their hand stamped once they saw the sign. When kids tried to get more candy on a second lap he's see their stamp and say they had to wait until 8 PM.

At 7:30, all the little kids and their parents were long finished and about 80% of the cars had left. At 7:45 PM the cops had the rest of the people leave the parking lot so they could close the gates. Trick, no treat!

no one in my town actually does any trick-or-treating off main street... every year, the police close off Main St. and have like a town-wide Halloween block party, I think to keep all the kids in one place.

You know some brat is going to see that note and will be ringing your door bell all through the night now.

to be honest, I agree knocking on strangers' doors with your kids is not the best way to go about this especially in this day and age... In the end they just want their free candy... I dont' see anything wrong with the other methods described.

People trick or treat during the day?

I used to think otherwise but the last few years kids coming home from school are immediately brought out by their parents and ring my bell during the day. At night, there's too much shenanigans going on with teenage gangs with eggs, TP, & shaving cream who have no intention of actually procuring candy. You know who you are. I don't think I got any rings after dark.
Do you have one of those narrow windows beside your front door?
Just put a shotgun on a stool. No one will knock on your door or egg the house, I promise.

How hard can it be to hook your doorbell directly up to a 110V circuit? Geez, man, think like a geek!

I recall as a kid that homes with their porch light on were giving out candy and homes with their porch light off were not.

This is the lamest fucking thing I've ever heard of. :( I'm SO glad they didn't pull this bullshit when I was young. I feel bad for today's kids, the safety brigade / lawyers really are ruining everything.

Trick-or-treating on Halloween? PEDOS
Play outside? No, too dangerous - we'll either set up a "play date" or keep the kids inside playing video games. Timmy might skin a knee, or *gasp* break a leg!
Diving boards? OMG PARALYSIS LAWSUIT AAARGHHH
Trampolines? HAAAHAHAHAHAHAH
Go-karts? Only if they're governed to 15mph or less, mister.
Football at recess? AIIIIEEEEEEE
Snowball fights? YOU ARE A TERRORIST
etc...

Isn't it best to go about your day like normal while babies are sleeping so that they become accustomed to the noise? If you tip-toe around the house and disable your doorbell just because they're sleeping, then they're going to get used to sleeping in silence and not be able to sleep in the presence of noise.
