Please NEVER shake a baby!

Last night one of my reports ( Val ) came in and asked if she could go home. Val explained that her nephew's baby was in Peoria in critical condition. I stood in horror as Val explained that her 22 year old nephew had shaken the 4 month old baby as a result of it's crying, then tossed it on the bed.
The baby stopped responding and was taken to a local hospital, then air lifted to Peoria. As of this evening the baby does respond to it's Mother's voice, however it's eyes role to the left as soon as they open, then they don't move. The Doctors feel that the chance of a full recover is very low at this point.
The Father was arrested at the hospital by the Peoria Police Department at the request of the Ottawa Police Chief, and is currently in jail in Peoria.
There has got to be something we can do about this as a country. It is obvious that this kid wasn't ready to be a Father. Why is it that a couple who is about to be married by a member of the clergy must council for hours first, yet we allow a newborn to be taken from the hospital with a hand full of baby care information?
I'd like to ask the people of Anandtech say a prayer for this baby tonight. I will try to keep you updated as information is passed to me.

Love your Children,
kevin

I shall pray for this precious baby. Life is so very precious yet you take it for granted. I have a baby boy 1 years old now. When he cannot stop crying I never ever shake him. I let remind myself that he is a baby, and that babys do cry, and will always cry. I'm only 19 years old, and I've never ever shaken him. I know what the results can lead to. I feel very sorry for this family, and I hope that the baby will recover 100%. With Jesus anything is possible, and lets all take a few minutes out of our time to pray for this innocent litle boy.

Thanks guys! Even if I dont know this person, I still feel as if it was my own.

just kidding, if parents are that dumb, they really need to be locked up and have their reproductive organs removed.

Next time you see a PSA for laying your baby down on it's back or not to shake it and think, "Jeez, how many times am I gonna have to see this damn ad again?", remember, it's not you they're trying to (and unfortunately not suceeding) reach.

Prayers to the innocents who suffer needlessly at the hands of the thoughtless.

My prayers go out to that baby, and also to all children everywhere.

One day, when I am done raising my own, you will see me out there fighting for others.

It would seem that loving and caring for a baby would fall under the common sense category. Just makes me wonder what goes through some people's heads.

EDIT: I do hope and pray for the baby's recovery.

this is common sense. babies are very fragile, with soft fragile spots that should be handled with care. no matter how frustrated you are, you never do anything like that to endanger the welfare of a baby.

Maybe if the father's stupidity has a genetic basis, then natural selection will that behavior away. Too bad it's only a thought. There will always be someone who will marry idiots and have their kids.

I just became sick reading this. Man, that's terrible.

What is wrong with some people? :|

Yes, I'll say a prayer as well.

its incidents like this that make me wonder, why the hell do people need a licence or permit for almost everything but having children?

Perhaps having a child should not be a right, but a priviledge.

He was 22 years old, you could hardly call him a kid, as many people decide to start thier families around that age. However, I'd agree that he shouldn't have been a father.

I hope the child recovers :(

They should hook that 22 year old up into what amounts to a giant paint can shaker and let 'er rip for about six hours. Then toss him into the local dump. Scum.

Here in Texas they have a HUGE campaign with the slogan, "Never, never shake a baby!" It's all over town and was a bit odd to see when I arrived a couple months ago (they even have it in Spanish, "Nunca, nunca [something] a un bebe". I can appreciate the wisdom of such a campaign, but it's just a little strange when even the local Burger King has it up on their marquis. I never knew it was such a problem, however. Some things I just assume are common sense, but I suspect that common sense is uncommon with many, many people.

The baby is still hanging in there. The doctors are not offering any good things though... I am so sick over all of this.
