Some of you here have done a great job of displaying your ignorance. "Social Anxiety Disorder", however you choose to call it, is quite real to those who have to deal with it. True, it is one of those over-diagnosed and over-medicated disorders, but that does not take away from the suffering that some go through.
Have any of you doubters ever witnessed a grown man break down into tears just trying to walk into a fast food restaurant? Those that are so quick to judge, do you really understand what it is like to feel that way? Somehow, I doubt it.
That said, in cases like "social anxiety disorder", I don't believe that medication is always the answer. Most poeple in that situation respond well to counseling, and drugs are not needed.
Anyone who would say something like, "Paxil is for the weak-minded", or "Drugs are not the answer" simply has no clue. Here's a newsflash: With the exception of panic attacks (whose cause is completely biological), medication is never the only answer. In the case of "social anxiety disorder", it can lessen a person's fears just enough to give them that "boost" they need to begin recovery. It is not a cure-all; it is only one tool to help treat the disorder.
Morella,
Don't allow the ignorant and uninformed to upset you. There's a lot of good advice in this thread. I take Paxil myself (for depression), so feel free to PM me with any questions about it.
