now that i dont have to drive the jeep daily (new car) i plan on fixing it up, including fixing the leak... just making sure there isnt any legal problems while i do it.

the T-35 in the bolt pattern i have is a pretty rare transmission and parts have to be special ordered (even seals), so its not easy to fix the leak. ive tried looking for the leak also and its not real generalized.
Do you live in an "organized community" with codes of conduct , etc?
At the very least, you're violating waste disposal ordinances, regarding the proper disposal of hazardous waste products. Which tranny fuid is, btw. Given that in most areas of California there is a seperate storm drain sytem from the sanitary sewer, gutter water and surface runoff that makes it to the gutters goes directly to the ocean.
Fix it or park a pan underneath it. Letting it spew on the face of Mother Earth is obscene.

Where did tranny fluid come from in the first place?

Basically right out of the earth......hmmm....but that makes too much sense.

BTW, when they use asphault on the roads it is basically nothing more than oil mixed with crushed stone...go figure....the water washes right down the road>storm gutter>Ocean...YIKES!!!!!!!!!

O no! We might put something we took from the earth back into it.

Crickies!

Well, in a way it is damaging the "cleaniness" and they are being a prick about it.

Just fix it yourself, a leaky gasket (pan I assume) is not hard and is totally DIY.

i have a pan under it right now if it makes you feel better.

yes i live in a home owners association. but i park the jeep outside of the complex because of this problem. i park it on the public road the complex is on.

its not like half the other cars on the block arent leaking oil too. its just mine is old so they point fingers.

i have motorcycles too, the other day one got a little hot and overflowed a little coolant, one of the nosy neighbors was asking if my engine block was busted on the motorcycle etc.. etc.. then he proceeded to wash the driveway down all night long.

Sweet! I'd buy that in a second!

The parts for that tranny shouldn't be too bad to find. I know a bunch of european cars (Volvo, Jaguar) used it as well.

I have heard that leaving a t-35 sit will cause it to leak. Perhaps this is the cause?

It is highly possible that California will just implode one day due to the vacuous stupidity of a large portion of it's population. Tell your neighbor to shut the heck up.
We can only hope. We can only hope.

Wow... your neighbors are idiots. I am not usually polite to those kind of nosy people.

ATF and antifreeze are far less toxic than used engine oil. The biggest problem with antifreeze is that it is both tasty (like kool-aid so I am told) and poisonous, and so children or animals might try to drink it.

you clean up the leak because the chemicals in the oil can react with other stuff in the ground. just because it starts out as transmission fluid doesnt mean it will stay as transmission fluid

it is also recommended by the manufacturers that you clean up any spill anyway... look up the MSDS of any transmission fluid and it will tell you to clean up accidental spills (something along those lines).

the thread isnt about whether or not i should fix the leak etc... (it will get fixeD)

its bout what is the legality of a slow drip leak.

Regardless of the state's legality, FIX THE PROBLEM.

The neighbor's may be pricks, but you're a retard for not fixing that hunk of junk.

Fix it for toss it. Frankly I'm a bit apalled by the sentiment being cast by fellow OTers. You do know that if Americans back in the day never gave a sh*t about environmental issues, we'd all be drinking and swimming in filth. Don't believe it is just a problem you can forget and pass down to whoever receives it. Take responsibility, jeez.

Have a BBQ. Invite all of your friends with crappy, leaking vehicles. Make sure they don't live in your neighborhood. Have them park all over the street. Enjoy the ensuing fun.

it would be nice to know if my vehicle could be impounded *while* im fixing it.
and if you can take the time away from driving your prius, PM me ill give you my paypal info and you can mail me the money to fix it.
does that jeep look like its real fun to drive in the rain or the cold? no i was broke ass.
the us has some of the strictest environmental laws, while 6 billion of the worlds enhabitants commit environmental atrocities just to make enough food to eat.
if i crapped out pure crude all day long and smoked 10 packs of ciggarettes a day it wouldn't come close to the environmental tragedy's occouring in south east asia.
im gonna hit you with a real shocker here, cars pollute period, they all leak oil, they drive on tires that are petroleum products. the production of cars takes energy and refined materials that result in waste water.

the road im driving on is a petroleum product, treated yearly with petroleum products to keep it from cracking. a few drops of clean oil is the least of our worries.

the computer you spew useless posts from takes energy from coal power plants, belching smoke into the air.

i suggest you get a bicycle and ride the earth ghandi style. hunger strike perhaps? modernized food is non sustainable and unhealthy.

i have a jeep that leaks a fair amount of transmission fluid. maybe a quart every month or so. i live in a fufu area that has been giving me alot of crap about it.

one guy threatened to call the cops today and report my vehicle as a gross polluter. my jeep has had the engine and tranny rebuilt 10k miles ago and is smog exempt. i think by the definition of gross polluter it would not be considered because of its smog exemption (plus the motor runs really clean seeing as its rebuilt).

i will probably be selling the vehicle soon as i bought a 98 volvo. in the mean time what is the legality of having a leaky vehicle (parked on the public street).

its smog exempt and runs fine.

pic of jeep 😀

****** the legality of it quit making a mess of my world and clean up your act. really that is gross i do not want my storm drains full of your tranny fluid.

if you dont have something to say on topic, i prefer that you don't say it.

where in the thread did i ever say i wasnt going to repair it? i just want to make sure johnny 5-0 doesnt roll up while im wrenching on it.

i even stated that ive put a oil catcher underneath it to catch anything that drops.

ive stated that it will take time to fix the problem, special gaskets would need to be ordered that will take time. if my neighbor calls the cops and someone comes out here it would happen before the replacement parts would arrive.

hence my concern over the legality. quit turning this thread into something its not

Just move man. Move far away from that state and never look back. 😛
Yep, we don't worry about those things in states that begin with the letter T. We have real criminals to worry about, like that chick who burned the bbq last weekend.

If the cops are being pricks they can give you a "fix it" ticket, and that's about it.

But if a cop shows up and you show him the pan, he will be a prick to the neighbor that bitch about it.
