Hi All!:)

I'm looking to buy a PCI Hardware Modem, and the only PCI Hardware Modems that I can find are 3Com/US Robotics Modems... Are there any others?... I'm looking to save some Money if possible.

Please List Your Favorite PCI Hardware Modem Here.

Thanks and Love You!

I like the Lucent based modems - they aren't hardware based, but there are drivers for most OSes (unless you need it to work with raw DOS) and are dirt cheap. Computer Geeks has the Hawking version for $11 or 12 - sorry, the Hawking is gone, but they have a generic Lucent for $10.
If you really need a modem that will work with DOS or some other OS that doesn't support drivers, then I suggest external serial. Compgeeks has one for about $24. - including cable. External is almost always the best general pupose modem, period. It's what I use.

Ditto with the 3com US Robotics 56k Fax Voice Modem. Had one in my previous computer for 6yrs. and now one in the new computer although only using it for faxing. Hard to beat solid, proven reputation. I'd buy again even if it's a few bucks xtra.
Cheers,
Hagen

Duvie,

I looked everywhere and could not find anywhere where this was a Hardware Modem... Does this Modem have Jumpers?... Can You use it with Linux?

Try a Creative card, i have never had problems.

By the way, go with cable, once you have felt the raw speed it has to offer you never go back. I know I wont... ;)

My current favorites are the 3Com model 2976/2977, although personally speaking, I don't think the various software modems from either Lucent/Agere, 3Com or Intel are "bad" at all. Better driver development and massively fast CPUs these days seemed to have eliminated many of the drawbacks of these "soft" modems.

My all time favorite is the Actiontec Call Waiting 56k PCI. Best modem for general use and gaming I ever used. A shame it's not being made any more.

The Lucent/Agere PCI chipsets work with Linux. Just avoid the ones made by Zoom/Hayes. Never have been able to get one of their lucent based external modems to work.

Thanks Everyone for Your replys and help!:)

I'm going to go with the 3Com/USR 56k Fax Voice Hard Modem, and save me a headache or two... The only one else that I'd consider is the Actiontec, but since they don't make them anymore it doesn't seem to be a wise choice; plus the 3Com is cheaper.

Thanks Again and Love You!
