UPDATE- today (well yesterday its 3:30 in the morning) the police found my car after almost 3 months. It was a neighborhood away, apparently had been there for a couple of months abandoned, looks like they drove it awhile then ditched it. The battery was discharged/destroyed, the ignition and lock are extremely 'loose' from whatever they
used to jimmy it/jack it. I put a new battery in, it didn't want to start, worked on it a bit in the dark, and it actually started... but dang, smells BAD, been sitting so long and abused
I guess. It's full of trash, etc. Gym bag and movies gone, but all the books are still in the trunk...LMFAO! Guess thieves in my area don't read :). Don't have insurance, registration is about to expire on Tuesday, so it'll have to sit until I can get it into the mechanic for an overhaul.

This was great timing- someone did a hit and run on my other car this week, while it was parked, smashed it in just above the left tire, bent things that I don't even know what they do, had my mechanic pound out what he could this morning, before the other car was found. A piece of metal came loose, almost took out my tire when I was on the highway yesterday (new tires too, had to get 'em because of all the rain and driving this old thing so much).

The car battery is sitting on my floor, and went to walmart just before 11pm and got a club for it. Guess my 50 a month raise I got in January will be going for car insurance, lol.

>>>>>>>>>>
The car I bought this year (used all my savings to buy it and fix everything) was stolen sometime during the night.... luckily, I hadn't yet sold my old car (1966) which gets a whole 11 miles to the gallon, won't start when it's raining or cold, and needs $500-$1000 work immediately.

So, basically, my life is over at this point- my credit is ruined, and I can't pay the 20% interest+full insurance on a new vehicle. My new job only allows my to break even each month with a little left over-
I was hoping to begin paying down my credit cards this month (used my last balance+savings for lasik a few weeks ago).

I spent 2.5 years to find a semi-decent job, and now this. Oh, all my school books and the electronic copy of my work for one of my classes (will have to do a quarter of the course over since it hadn't been submitted yet) was in the car. Classwork is due by Wednesday and Thursday- instead of doing homework right now, I'm sitting at the cafe on my laptop (which thankfully was not in the trunk of my car where I forget it often). I don't care about the classses themselves- but my student loans come due if I fail my classes- that's about $6k due immediately, sigh.

I can't buy new books until Monday- and that'll be another couple of hundred dollars, and not enough time left to get all my coursework done.

The dirty rotten bastiches even got my brand new copy of The Empire Strikes Back from the boxed set- I hadn't even got to watch the whole thing yet. Oh, and all of my Chinese books for next semester, my gym gear, clothes- my nice winter coat is in there, cds, etc. &(**&*&*&*(&*(&*(&*(&)(*8979ew8r0e

Please kill me in a way that doesn't cause pain and that I never see coming (like in that Deep Space Nine episode where Quark wants Garak to kill him, lol)

Ok, please kill me now :(

while i feel terrible for you, leaving a parked car filled with stuff is just asking for it to be stolen.

i'd tell the prof that the car was stolen and see what happens. also call up credit card company and tell them that.

Why the hell did you spend money ($2000+) on lasik which is basically a cosmetic surgery?

That aside, go get drunk.

Sorry to hear about your car :(

Also, didn't you have insurance on it? If so, pay the $500 deductible or whatever and buy a new one...

Stupid question (I think I know the answer based on your distraught nature), did you have insurance on the stolen vehicle?

That's my response, to a "T". I'm very sorry that you got robbed, but you asked for it.

Possibly where you were raised, you left the keys in the ignition and now you live "in the big city and go to school."

To be honest, if I was an insurance investigator, I'd be suspicious of YOU for leaving so many valuables in the car...it's allmost like you wanted it to get stolen.

everything was in the trunk, the car was parked directly in front of my apartment right under the street light (my roomie just bought a new truck and hasn't sold the old one yet so it's parked in the spot)- if I could afford insurance that covered theft, well then I'd have it- actually, I'd have a brand new car financed, but I couldn't afford the insurance payments, so that is why I paid cash for this one.

Wavefront is less than $2000, and I was almost legally blind- besides, it's tax deductible through my new health coverage/pre pay expesne account I just got in September, and I was hoping to be able to play sports, learn to dive, etc., this coming year (I just lost 50 lbs in 2004), which I haven't been able to do since I was 13. Things were really looking up this year until this happened :(

It was a 1996 Altima GXE, had it 6 months, ran beautifully, I put $1000 to fix the brakes and CV boots, etc.

Umm... Liability? I carry liability only on my car (1995 Impreza), to go to full coverage would double my rates.

To the OP, while it sucks it could be a cheap lesson for you.

Actually two lessons:

1) If losing the car puts you in a financial bind, you couldn't really afford the car (or you're living too close to the financial edge)
2) If losing your car poses a serious threat to you, you need comprehensive insurance. If you can't afford the insurance, see #1.

You will likely get it back (sans any valuables easily removed, of course), hope it works out for you.

well duh- see the part where I've been looking for a job for 2.5 YEARS since grad school, I've been a substitute teacher, teaching assistant, staffer/file clerk, election campaign worker, manager, sales and contracts assistant, customer service rep, scab during the grocery strike, temp auditor/staffer, etc.
(management job eliminated by jobs moved overseas or new technology, my entire department was fired-new software and call center in India, paperwork was digitized, part of the work subcontracted out).

My last 2 cars- first was originally out of state and would no longer smog, etc.- I donated it to a charity for missing children that sold it out of state. second car- right after I pumped $2000 into it, the engine gasket/seal blew, it was a total loss. Pulled my old car out of storage (5 years it was sitting), drove it for a year and a half while getting money together for this car. The eye surgery was basically a freebie, as I noted it comes out of my pre-pay health expenses account, which MUST be spent by the end of the year or be lost (and my insurance company re-pays me the price of the office visits), so I'll get some money back for that to cover what I put on the credit card. I waited to have surgery until I got my new job, kept post-poning it.

The edge man- I'm way, way beyond the edge. I've got 2 BAs, Master's, and a year of law school, loans and credit card debt to my eyeballs (mostly for food and bills/loan payments over those 2.5 years since 2-3 part-time jobs just didn't do it- oh, and this laptop which I used for grad school). The only way I even buy stuff on this forum is to sell the stuff I've already got, lol.

Time for a new auction of computer parts, lol.

The stuff in the trunk did not have a huge monetary value- just really bad timing to be stolen the week of finals, I can get new gym gear, etc.

sorry to hear that, but i guess eat out less and consider less schooling. more education is not necessary a good investment. buy stuff that are only necessary?

recently i just paid off my entire stafford loan all at once and it left me with $1000 in the bank. well i eat at home, bring lunch to work, pass up a $150 9800pro, going to pass up a $138AR 17-inch LCD, passed up the $800 dell 700m...

and now i have $2500 in the bank. i guess once you see through the commodities you can save a lot of money.

I've actually already cut all my spending to almost zero, I bought things in September when I got my job, but don't need anything now- was preparing to pay off my debts. Glad you paid off your loans- grad school and law school averaged about $25,000 a year for 3 years- I'll let you figure that one out.

Right now, I go to CostCo and buy the megapack of hotdogs, 6 packs for $5.29, and eat raw tuna and broc/celery every day, comes out to about $1.50 a day with diet soda. The loan payments and credit card are the real killers, but I figured with the car paid for and in good condition, and finally getting a stable job, next year was going to be great. Now, back to praying to the lotto gods, lol.

:(:(:(

Damn dude thats aweful
People who steal are the lowest pieces of sh!t on the earth.

You should consider investing in a gun, insurance, and security system when you purchase your next vehicle.

If anyone came near my car I'd Edward Norton their azz (minus the racist part).

STFU. The guy got his car stolen, he wasn't ASKING for it. If you own a car, it's yours, and you should be able to put anything in it you like. Who doesn't keep CD's, gym gear, books for class, and a DVD or two in their car? You never expect someone idiot to come along and ruin your life.

For MichaelD and sniperruff, all of my prayers go for both of you to get something personal stolen from you (better if it's a $10,000 automobile), and then see if you tell yourselves you were asking for it.

How appropriate, getting a car stolen is nothing you can "plan for" and a 1996 Altima is a fairly reliable car when fixed and well maintained. On your second point, people like to occasionally purchase leasure items to eith make themselves feel better or give them something else to do other than "work-sleep-eat-work-sleep-eat..." Not everybody on this planet is born an accountant, and not everyones path is a streight one. Seeing you insult another person when they are down instead of trying to help them cope tells me volumes about you.

Ahh, that sucks man. Don't listen to all the "financial wizards" here who aren't in your shoes. Chances are they're in the same " living on the edge, one bad thing can push you over" in some way also. You can bet if THEIR car were stolen with their copy of the latest Vid Game, they would be on here whining as well.
First, make sure to tell the CHP about your loss. Their stolen car unit is pretty good. Also, hit Craigslist with an APB for the readers/ users of that forum.
Offer a reward of some kind.
Rule #1 in Big City, CA is NEVER leave anything in the car that you can't afford to lose.
Still sucks, no matter the situation. At least you have the other car to get you to work and such. It would really be fvcked to be without wheels in San Diego.

Eh relax. In an ideal world, the car should be able to sit with a million dollars in plain visible sight and not be stolen. That is not the world we live in. When they say "asking for it" they don't mean it to be assholes, they are telling it how it is. Everyone knows through common sense that you don't leave anything of value in a car. Its just plain common knowledge that you don't do things like that.

The OP never deserved to get his car stolen. Both MichaelD and sniperruff both said "feel terrible for you" or "sorry". They don't deserve to have anything stolen more than the OP did.

maybe I missed. I assume OP bought a brand new car which he will be financing for years. my apology, if that isn't the case. accident and car stolen are something you can "plan for," that's why insurance exist.

back to OP's post, he seems like he is whining not having no money to pay for his books while he can buy a brand new dvd set, which don't get me sympathethy. I do leisure buying alot, but I do put priority on the things that I buy. for dvd, I will just buy it used. I scored 3 dvd, for $4 each.

That's exactly the thing, this isn't a million dollars worth of stuff. It's merely a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff. And if that little amount of personal belongings is enough to break this guy down, then they need to be a little more sympathetic, not saying he asked for it because he left his damn school books in there. Hell, I'm sure I paid more for my CD player and speakers that's in my car than what he lost (minus the car of course). Does that mean that since I don't take the player and speakers out every single time I exit the car, that I'm asking for it to be stolen?

Who doesn't keep ALL SORTS OF IMPORTANT STUFF AND A WAD OF HUNDREDS in their WALLETS? You never expect someone idiot to come along and ruin your life.

i don't see the difference between a wallet and a car from the standpoint of a bastard thief. the only difference is that you can't just walk away with a car easily. you have to realize that there are a bunch of bad people in this world.
